Lenni Reviews: Soda Pop Soldier by Nick Cole

In this dystopian future, companies hire gamers to battle it out for the rights to advertising space. After my initial hesitation and brief fit of hysteriucal laughter at the thought of eHarmony, Match.com, Christian Mingle, and Farmers Only battling out in a cage match for the right to inundate us with their insipid nonsense (Three-way battle between Papa Johns, Little Caesars, and Dominos? Would CiCi's buffet be an unexpected challenger? Man, I laughed for DAYS!), I started this book with a bit of guilt that I'm not a huge gamer and a healthy load of disbelief this concept would be pulled off in an enjoyable way.

The book is written well. You follow professional gamer PerfectQuestion as he struggles to win for his company, broke, cheating girlfriend, drinking a lot, and at the end of his rope; willing to join an illegal online gaming universe referred to as the Black. Things get out of hand and the online battle for his life spreads into the real world.

By no means is this a 'bad book.' Nick Cole has the writing chops to pull off the gaming action and PerfectQuestion's desperation, so the reading is nice and smooth. Cole's work reminds me of Jeff Somers' work (but Cole is MUCH less depressing). My only complaint perhaps would be it's 100+ pages in before PerfectQuestion is directly threatened. It was cool and all to see PerfectQuestion in action and get to know how his job works and how sick and twisted the Black is, but it seemed to me our protagonist should have met with the main conflict sooner.

Although, I certainly wasn't bored. I was pulled right into the world and loved every second. My hands were twiching for controller buttons and the descriptions left me fiending for some playtime with my consoles. I truly cared about PerfectQuestion, even without knowing his name. I clicked instantly with what Cole is saying about what the anonymity of being online does to people's behavior and how easily the consequences of that behavior can leak into your offline life. I had fun reading this; it was an unexpectedly enjoyable romp. If you're into tech heavy scifi, first person shooters, and the trials of just a normal guy trying to survive, I think you'll enjoy this book.

Can't get enough of Lenni's writing? See more here.

New Ongoing SPIDER-MAN & THE X-MEN Fills a Void

When Wolverine dies, it makes it a little difficult to have a book in present-day continuity called Wolverine and the X-Men. So, Marvel’s having that other ubiquitous character takeover for an all-new all-different series called: Spider-Man and the X-Men!

Announced Wednesday on Comicbook.com, the new series comes from writer Elliott Kalan and artist Marco Failla. While the name seems to imply Spider-Man’s in charge, it makes a little more sense than that: Spidey’s the guidance counselor! The series launches in December, and the first arc features a unique team-up: Sauron and Stegron the Dinosaur Man.

”The X-Men aren’t very happy with having Spider-Man involved with the school,” Kalan said in the announcement interview. “He’s not a mutant, and though he may be a friend of the X-Men, he’s not a member of the family.” However, it seems his placement was one of Wolverine’s wishes before he died.

The conflicts will come from within and without. Spider-Man has a mission to run for Wolverine with the X-Men, but also has reason to believe one of the kids at the school is a plant for the mutants’ enemies (something that’s happened more than once, even at this iteration of the school). And while the book won’t just be about Spider-Man fighting X-Men villains, “it’s super-awesome to make

Spidey fight X-villains,” Kalan admitted.
Fans of the younger generation of mutants shouldn’t worry about them being pushed to the background, though. “Time for Shark Girl and Glob Herman to take the main stage!” the writer said.

“I want to spotlight some of the newer X-men students who have been around for a little while but haven't gotten all of the attention I think they've deserved. The stars of this book are Spider-Man and his class of students. We'll see many of the other X-Men, but characters like Storm and Beast get plenty of attention.”
Spider-Man’s “special class” will consist of No-Girl, Rockslide, Glob Herman, Ernst, Hellion, Shark Girl, and Eye Boy, specifically, and Kalan says he’s “enjoying figuring out their voices and personalities.”

Indie Publisher Darkrose Studios Launches TRDWTR

Hey Otakus and Geeks here is some cool news for you from newcomers Darkrose Studios. Darkrose is a new comic publishing company that is getting ready to launch their new franchise TRDWTR (Technological Research and Development Working Toward a Resolution). Check out the details below.

TRDWTR is Darkrose Studios’ first title. It is a 30-part graphic novel series, set in a plausible geopolitical future. It follows a team of hi-tech special operatives, who have become the only force standing between hope and anarchy. The novel has been written and created by Morgan Rosenblum, founder of Darkrose Studios, and illustrated by Ray Dillon, best known for his work on Borderlands 2 and Game of Thrones. TRDWTR Issue One will premiere on Times Square, at the Midtown Comics book store on September 10th, 2014. Issue One is limited to 500 prints and will be sold at $4.99 per copy exclusively at Midtown Comics stores. TRDWTR Part One (containing issues 1 - 4) will become available on September 30th on Amazon.com and in brick-and-mortar stores nationwide a month thereafter. In addition to print publications, Darkrose Studios are also working on a live-action series based on the graphic novel. The teaser trailer of the live-action series which you can see below.

With the series in production since April 2014, Mr. Rosenblum aims to release the entire first season in mid- 2015. Along with the graphic novel and the live action series, the TRDWTR website also plays an important role in immersing TRDWTR fans into the story. It challenges them to become TRDWTR operatives and complete various real-world missions. Much in the style of the Command & Conquer game series, the missions are accompanied by live-action video clips of TRDWTR characters interacting with the players to debrief, congratulate and antagonize them. As a reward for completing these missions the players can unlock large portions of the graphic novel, as well as an animated motion comic voiced by the actors of the series. According to Morgan Rosenblum, the immersive storytelling experience that Darkrose Studios create for their fans set their titles apart from the other book launches. Mr. Rosenblum will be chairing a panel on the topics of trans-media storytelling and self-publishing at New York Comic Con in October 2014.

Greg Berlanti Confirms The Supergirl TV Series Is In The Works

There have been mixed reports about a Supergirl television series, with it initially being claimed that comic book writer Michael Green was developing the show for DC Comics and Warner Bros. It was later revealed that he actually has no involvement, and that it will instead be Greg Berlanti (who executive produces Arrow and The Flash) steering the series, and joining him will be writer Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family). When Comic Book Resources caught up with the former at PaleyFest 2014,

Berlanti confirmed that a Supergirl series is in development, and while he couldn't give away any specifics, "We're just starting to work on it. We haven't gone to the networks yet, so. I'll be happy, very excited to talk about it once we know where its home will be and that kind of stuff, but not at this moment." While there had been claims that the series - which isn't expected to be called Supergirl as you can find out more about by clicking here - won't be heading to The CW, it clearly hasn't been shopped around yet, so Green Arrow and The Flash could have a powerful new friend very soon! Make Comic Books Like The Pros By Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente (Book Review)

"Make Comic Books Like The Pros" is a guide for any inspiring writer, wanting to learn how to write the style of comic books. Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente give enough information in this 84 pages to get you started. The book has a total of six chapters which covers basic story structure, putting your ideals on panels, building a team and even how to pitch your comic book.

One thing I found the most useful is the proper way to write a script. There is many ways to write a script but Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente give a very easy breakdown on how to write one. Everything is discussed from adding sound effects, formating the actual page and a breakdown of terminology. I also found helpful that the book takes time to describe to each job and role. Did you ever want to know the role of the inker, colorist and what it takes? It is explain in this book. The book is easy to read and the pacing of the writing keeps you reading till the end. One more honorable mention is the book explains a breakdown of cost for an indie publisher. The steps it might cost to get the book made, publish and even staff inquiry. In addition the amount of money you might make from sales is very helpful. Overall if you're looking for a guide to write comic books this book does very well. It's a quick read but it hits all the important points and information.

Final Grade: B+/8.5

Flowers of Evil (Anime Review)

Sometimes it doesn't pay to be a pervert. In Takao case he pays a very heavy price for his actions. Based on the manga "Flowers of Evil" is the anime adaptation of the hit series. Is it faithful to manga? Or is this adaptation as evil as the title?

Takao worships the class beauty, Nanako, from afar. When he is alone in the classroom one day after school, he notices her bag of gym clothes on the floor. He can't resist picking it up. He plans to return it, but the next day, all the girls are commiserating with Nanako that some pervert has stolen her gym clothes. Worse than that, their classmate Sawa quietly lets him know that she saw him take the clothes and will tell Nanako if he doesn't make a contract with her to do whatever she asks of him. And so their strange, tense relationship begins.

Five Survival Horror Games To Keep Your Eyes On

One of my favorite genre's is returning this year and next year in a huge way. Survival Horror games have been lacking in scares the pass couple of years. However with the successful hits of games such as Slender and Outlast. It's safe to say the direction that horror games is taking is a good direction. The scares are actually returning as developers are focusing more suspense and intensity instead of gore and shock. Here are several horror games you should keep your eyes on in the upcoming years.

1. Silent Hills
The big hit Playable Teaser has taken PS4 owners by storm. What happens when you combine the minds of Guillermo del Toro and Hideo Kojima? The answer to that is one scary as gaming experience. The Playable Teaser was not only scary, but it brought back the old scary feel that Silent Hill use to give us. Add the bonus that Walking Dead star Norman Reedus will be the main protagonist and you have something special. Even though Playable Teaser is said not to be related to Silent Hills it's great to see the type of tone Kojima and del Toro are going. Trust us when this game drops so will your controller. Kojima has promise that this game will make you shit your pants and judging by the reaction on Playable Teaser he might live up to his promise.

2. Fatal Frame Wii U

It's no secret that Fatal Frame is my favorite horror franchise of all time. The series nearly perfected what it's like to be in a Japanese horror film. Taking inspirations from old folk tales, films like Ringu and real life stories. Fatal Frame has scared it's fans for years. Well this time Fatal Frame will return for the Wii U. The trailer seems to follow the same m.o. as previous Fatal Frame games. Hopefully the scares are enough to keep veterans interested in the game.

3. Until Dawn

While Silent Hills is more psychological and Fatal Frame is more of the paranormal aspect in their games. Until Dawn focuses on eight teenagers being stalked by a killer. If you're a fan of classic slashers this might be the dream game you are waiting for. The game is said to play similar to Heavy Rain and if it's a Heavy Rain meets survival horror I won't mind it. As long as the story is great and the pacing keeps us tense this is will be a winner.

4. Resident Evil Revelations 2

It's no doubt that Resident Evil has lost some of they hardcore fans. The previous entry Resident Evil 6 wasn't well received.  However Resident Evil Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS went back to basic with a mixture of Resident Evil 4 gameplay. This combination not only work for hardcore fans but brought back the horror elements of Resident Evil. The sequel hopes to capitalize on the success with the return of Claire Redfield and newcomer Moira Burton the daughter of Barry from the first game. So far the plot is describe as Claire and Moira being kidnapped and held at a detention center. Judging by recent pics this looks to follow the same style as the previous game.

5. The Evil Within

The Evil Within will be heavily based on pure survival instincts. The game main selling point will be using your environment to survive. The game seems to be going for one of the most realistic horror game we seen in a while. There will be no regeneration for your body, health items are back and weapons will be scarce.

THE WALKING DEAD: ALL OUT WAR As Never Seen Before

In October, fans of Robert Kirkman’s THE WALKING DEAD will see the New York Times best-selling comic as never before with the publication of THE WALKING DEAD: ALL OUT WAR ARTIST PROOF EDITION. In this 248-page hardcover from Image Comics/Skybound, artist Charlie Adlard’s raw pencils for the twelve-issue arc are reproduced, uninked and unaltered from how they appear on his artboard.

The ALL OUT WAR story arc marks a major turning point in THE WALKING DEAD, as Rick Grimes unites several communities to fight the villainous Negan and his “Saviors,” while around them the dead continue to roam. The future of the Survivors, Hilltop, and Kingdom communities depends precariously on Negan’s right-hand man, who has turned against him — and not everyone is going to see it through the war alive. Check out the preview stills below.
