Graveyard Shift #1 (Comic Review)

Reunited after their memorable run on the critically acclaimed NOBLE CAUSES, JAY FAERBER and FRAN BUENO bring you a new tale of crime, horror, and romance! It's Fright Night-style thrills and Castle-style crime-solving as a homicide detective and his girlfriend find their love put to the ultimate test when they run afoul of a gang of vampires!

Who the hell does a police raid at 4:30 am? Apparently Liam and his fellow officers to take down a suspect name Tobias Strickland. Graveyard Shift is a refreshing take on the vampire lore. It takes everyday citizens and police officers and puts them in a city that is ruined by vampires. The first volume does a good job of setting up future plot lines to come. Our protagonist Liam is a character readers will gravitate too. He's a hardworking guy, cares about his family and friends and has a great relationship with girlfriend Hope. However things start to change when Liam and his team fail to catch Tobias Strickland. For the sake of spoilers I won't go into anymore details. I will say that Jay Faerber and Fran Bueno wasted no time giving us tragedy. Characters are introduce and gone by the next page. The tragedy was a little disappointing because I started to connect with certain characters, hopefully backstory and relationships with Liam will be developed in flashback panels. The action is also top notch and brings intensity to the pages. The artwork is done in great detail and leaves me curious for the next issue.

Overall Graveyard Shift #1 is a good read and has great build up for future plots. The characters that live are likeable but it was disappointing to see characters get taken out so quickly. The artwork is great and if you like vamps vs the police this might be up your alley.

Final Grade 8.0/10
