Cosplayer Spotlight: BadKidBabe

Otakus and Geeks is pleased to present to you our new popular feature, Cosplayer Spotlight. It is dedicated to showcase talented individuals from the cosplay community. Catch some new talent or get a look at some well-established members from the world of cosplay.

My name is BadKidBabe and I'm a new cosplayer from NY! I'm in a group called the CosBaes with some of the most sweetest and talented girls, please look out for our next projects! We would love to meet new friends to share some cosplay memories with.

How did you get into cosplaying and how long you been doing it?
I always thought of cosplaying but was too shy to try it. After trying to do some Halloween shopping, I got mad at the little choices females had so I made my own costume. I figured let me try it once and see how it goes and now I’ve been cosplaying for a little over a year.

What is cosplay to you?
Cosplay to me is a fun way to show off your craft and admire others hard work. Making your own costumes or props is all a type of art form for me.

Do you have someone who inspires you to cosplay? If so who?
I’m inspired by Vampy Bit Me, Animia and of course Yaya Han. The way they pull off their cosplays are just amazing and they are just some of the sweetest people!

Do your family and friends know you cosplay?
My family and friends know that I cosplay and of course I get mixed reviews from them.

Are you doing cosplay as a hobby or professionally?
I started cosplay as a hobby mainly because I just love making things and knowing I made it well just gives me great satisfaction! But if my hobby takes me somewhere I wouldn't mind thinking of doing cosplay professionally.

Do you only do local or other conventions, as well?
I’ve been doing local conventions but I do try to go to out of state ones. I just attended Katsucon 2015 this past weekend.

How many conventions do you go in a year?
Since I’ve started not that long ago, I would say anywhere from 3-4 cons.

If you can, cosplay anywhere is the world? Where would it be?
Comiket, AnimeJapan.

When cosplaying what do you feel is most important? (e.g. detail , character portrayal, etc.)
I’m more of a hands-on kind of person when creating cosplays so I feel detail is most important.

What is your pet peeve when it comes to cosplay?
Definitely bad attitude, It’s already hard getting negative feedback from some that aren’t into the whole cosplay community, let’s not give bad attitude to other cosplayers and get along.

Do you prefer to buy or make your cosplays/props?
I prefer making my own but if I am on a time crunch, I may buy some few things.

When deciding on how you want your cosplay to look, what goes through your mind? (e.g. does the fabric/material have to look like the picture)
I try to stay true to the photo of the cosplay but I do tweak it a little to have my own little flair.

What type of characters do you enjoy cosplaying?
I like to cosplay Marvel and Anime characters. I'm a big fan of Fairy Tail and Soul Eater.

What is your favorite part of putting on your cosplay?
The overall look and having others see my work. Also knowing that I pulled off creating it is definitely a plus.

How do you choose the characters you cosplay as?
I choose the characters I really like from either comics, manga or anime. But sometimes I may be drawn to a character I may not know well mainly for how their appearance is and makes me really want to make the costume.

Are there any cosplays that you wish you could pull off?
I wish I was able to make armor better. Then maybe I can pull off Erza’s Heaven’s Wheel Armor from Fairy Tail.

Do you have any cosplays that you will never do and why?
None that I can really think of.

Do you believe that a person has to have certain qualities to pull off a cosplay? (e.g. facial structure, etc.)
Not necessarily. Of course we all wish to look like the character we are cosplaying but in the end it’s just fun to get away from our every day routine.

What are some of your dream cosplays?
A lot of Fairy Tail Erza’s exquips and Mirajane Take Overs.

Outside of cosplaying, what else do you do?
I make commissioned toys from DIY figurines and I paint. I just recently finished a commissioned toy project of the cast of Cowboy Bepop. Visit my instagram @BadKidBabe for some photos of my work.

How do you fund your cosplay?
Take on more hours at work.

Where do you go most often for photoshoots? Do you do photoshoots?
In studios and outdoor locations.

Do you prefer your images photoshopped or unshopped?
Either or is fine with me.
