Actually, I' Am Episode 1 Review
/Asahi Kuromine is a high school student who supposedly cannot keep a secret. One day he spots his crush Yoko Shiragami, unfurling a large pair of wings from her back. She explains to him that she is a vampire and is only able to attend a normal school on the condition that no one discover her true identity. Asahi swears to keep her secret but finds it hard to maintain seeing as how Yoko herself is an airhead and Asahi's friend Mikan keeps bullying the two of them.
Actually, I' Am is a romantic comedy with a fresh twist. But it suffers from the usual cliche formula that has plague anime romantic comedies for years. Ashahi Kuromine is a guy who can't keep a secret. He is easily readable and if you want the truth he's the guy to go to. This doesn't help when he is looking at girls in the classroom, and especially when it comes to his crush Yoko. When his friends find out about this secret crush on Yoko they encourage him to confess to her. He goes into school to find Yoko and stumbles upon her releasing her wings. Not to go further into the plot, the story is a fresh take one the boy meets creature formula. The fact that Ashahi can't keep a secret but now has no choice is a good a premise. The characters are likable but you seen them before. Ashahi is the shy boy who is always awkward around girls. Yoko is the dense creature that is afraid of interaction, and has no idea how Ashahi feels. The writing and dialogue is fine and the supporting characters are interesting. One standout character is Akemi Mikan, the school journalist who stops at nothing to get a story. She is witty, energetic and sometimes creepy. As they say on the show she is hardcore. I'm curious how her interaction with Ashahi will be like in future episodes. Overall Actually, I' Am is off to a decent start. However it offers nothing new to the anime love genre. The fact that Ashahi can't keep secrets, will keep you interested but it has a long way to standing out from the pack.
