The World According to Spider-Man Review

Every wonder what it's like to be Spider-Man? Ever wonder what it's like to be a superhero. The World According to Spider-Man does just that. Written by author Daniel Wallace, the book takes you a guide on how to be a superhero according to our favorite neighborhood webslinger. Wallace has written a book that is witty, fresh and does justice to Spider-Man. The World According To Spider-Man also contains some cool facts such as Peter Parker's report card. I found it ironic that Spider-Man would get C- in gym. However I guess that was to not bring any suspicion onto him that he is Spider-Man.

The highlight of the book is when Spider-Man gives the reader tips on how to be a hero. He gives you insight on proper costume choices, breaking down the difference between super villians and regular crooks. He even gives you tips on balancing a love life when one is a superhero. Check out this hilarious conversation he has with M.J. below to see what I mean.

Superhero Problems
Overall if you love Spidey you will love this witty look into his world. Author Daniel Wallace does a great job of giving you Spidey's persona in this book. If you're a fan of the webslinger than this will be great to add to your collection. It's short, sweet and straight to the point. There is even a surprise cameo by a nemesis giving you his views on superheroes. This book is a winner. Suit up spidey fans.

Interview With Quincy Jones, Justin Kauflin and Alan Hicks

While at Tribeca Film Festival we had the honor of being in an roundtable interview with Quincy Jones, Justin Kauflin and Alan Hicks. The star (Justin Kauflin), the producer (Quincy Jones) and the director (Alan Hicks) of the film "Keep On Keepin." In Keep On Keepin’  a 23-year-old, blind piano prodigy, Justin Kauflin, who suffers terrible stage fright, finds his way to jazz legend and teacher Clark Terry, 89. Over the course of filming, Terry begins to lose his sight as an unlikely bond begins to take hold. When Justin is invited to compete in an elite international competition, Clark’s health takes a turn for the worse. As clocks tick, we are suddenly witness to two friends tackling the toughest challenges of their interwoven lives. Terry, now 93, was Quincy Jones’ first teacher, and mentor to Miles Davis. He is among the few performers ever to have played in both Count Basie’s and Duke Ellington’s bands. In the ‘60s Terry broke the color barrier as the first African-American staff musician at NBC - on The Tonight Show. The film is by first-time director Al Hicks, seven time Academy Award nominated producer Quincy Jones and producer Paula DuPre’ Pesmen from the Academy Award winning The Cove and Chasing Ice. The film has won best new documentary at the festival and I must say it's a must see. You can hear our interview below. A huge thanks and congrats to Quincy, Justin and Alan.

Celebs That Failed At Launching A Music Career

It's Music Monday here at Otakus & Geeks.  I wanted to do something different today. Today I want to showcase celebrities that try to enter the music world and failed. When I mean by failed I mean they really should stick to their day job. This list consists of athletes, actors and some reality show personalities.

Hulk Hogan
I can't think of no better way to kick off this list other than with Hulk Hogan and The Wrestling Boot Band. In 1995 Hulk Hogan dropped an abomination on the music world entitled "Hulk Rules." In this ten track album Hogan attempts to rap, sing and even do a ballad for a child that was in the Make A Wish Foundation. The lyrics are laughable that not even a child would probably ignore how horrible it is. "I use to tear my shirt, but now you torn my heart. I knew  you were a Hulkamanic right from the very start." Enough said!

Kobe Bryant
Kobe and Hulk Hogan won't be the only athletes on the list. Many people know Kobe Bryant as one of the best basketball players ever. However his music career wasn't so hot. In the year 2000 Kobe released his single K.O.B.E featuring supermodel Tyra Banks. The song was canned by critics and Kobe was later dropped by Sony.

Deion Sanders
In December of 1994 Deion Sanders gave the world an early Christmas present. This Christmas present was not a present we deserve. Instead we endure a lump of coal with an album entitled "Prime Time." The album was released on Capitol Records and was trashed by critics. However one song will forever follow Deion Sanders and that is "Must Be The Money."

Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks is one of the most successful models ever. Sometimes success does not transfer to other areas of entertainment. In 2004 Tyra took a crack at music and release a single "Shake Ya Body." The single attracted negative reviews and Tyra put a stop to releasing an album.

Macho Man Randy Savage
Apparently wrestlers listen to a lot of rap music. Hogan tried to rap and failed, but the Macho Man Randy Savage doing a rap album oooh yeah it happen. In the fall of October 2003 the Macho Man released a rap album entitled "Be A Man." The song also feature a diss track aimed at Hulk Hogan also called "Be A Man." I personally listened to this album and words can't describe how a person will react once they hear it. Believe it or not Macho Man might be the best wrestler to do music besides John Cena. The album must have been something if 50 Cent gave it a shout out.

50 Cent Endorses Macho Man Album

Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton released an album in 2006 entitled "Paris." Thankfully the album was only 40 minutes long and was huge flop, but it did manage to get a little buzz.

Kim Kardashian
Just press play enough said.

As Above, So Below Trailer

Check out the new trailer from Legendary Pictures horror flick "As Above, So Below." So far I like what I see. You can read the synopsis below.

Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all.

Otakon 2014 to Feature Manga-ka and Character Designer Yusuke Kozaki

Otakon 2014 has announce it's first guest for this year's convention. This year character designer Yusuke Kozaki has been confirmed to be in attendance. Yusuke Kozaki began accumulating accolades at the age of 19, winning the Young Magazine young talent award, and the Chiba Tetsuya Award soon after. His first short story, "Mikakunin Higoshojo Kaoru", was published by Young Magazine, and in 2002 his long-form story "Kyoko Karasuma" appeared in B-Street. He's currently working on the surreal, apocalyptic manga Donyatsu. Kozaki is increasingly in demand as a character designer; his crisply detailed look lends itself well to both anime (Speed Grapher, Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto) and video games (No More Heroes, Fire Emblem Awakening, Osu! Tatakae! Oendan). He also designed the virtual idol duo Meaw for Starchild Records. In addition, his Donyatsu manga has been adapted as a series of CGI animated shorts over the last year, and he has several as-yet-unannounced projects in the pipeline. Kozaki will work as the main character designer and illustrator for a Kickstarter project titled Under the Dog, which will launch its crowdfunding campaign in August. In this capacity, Kozaki will be contributing illustrations, character designs, and other works of art necessary to make Under the Dog visually engaging. Otakon 2014 will be held August 8-10 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD

Interview With Mark D. White (Author Of The Virtues Of Captain America)

We had chat with Professor Mark D. White author of the upcoming book "The Virtues Of Captain America." In THE VIRTUES OF CAPTAIN AMERICA (Wiley-Blackwell; Spring 2014) , philosopher and pop culture expert Mark D. White argues that "Cap" is indeed a hero for the contemporary era and someone to be emulated now more than ever. White reveals that Captain America's focus on core principles and ideals, combined with his sound judgment, compassion, and iron will, is anything but simple--and is precisely what we need to navigate 21st-century problems in our personal lives, our communities, and our country as a whole. White shows us that while Captain America is often regarded as a jingoistic flag-waver, he has been written consistently as representing a kind of patriotism that adheres to basic tenets of liberty and equality while staying above partisan politics.

1. OtakusandGeeks.com: Can you tell us a little about the moment you decided to write this book? When did you fall in love with the art of literature?

Mark D. White: The seed for this book was an op-ed piece I wrote when Captain America: The First Avenger came out, which now serves fairly well as a concise summary of the book. The more I thought about the ideas in that short essay and the personal and civic virtues that Captain America exemplifies, the more I wanted to write a book-length treatment of them. Plus, it was a chance to write an entire book in the style of my chapters for the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series, introducing some basic philosophy in the context of a classic superhero, but in this case with more of a directed focus to the book as a whole.

2. OtakusandGeeks.com: What is about Captain America that inspired you to write this book?

Mark D. White: I’ve always admired Cap’s moral code, which is repeatedly dismissed in the comics and by real-world fans alike as “black-and-white” and anachronistic. Also, I always found his focus on principle over politics inspiring and exactly what we should be focusing on if we want to get over the acrimony dominating our politics today.

3. OtakusandGeeks.com: Did you happen to catch the new Captain America movie "The Winter Solider?" If so what we're your thoughts on the film and its stand of morality, fear and what's right?

Mark D. White: I did, and I loved it – I thought the filmmakers found an excellent way to make Cap relevant for 2014 while his moral character is still very much grounded in the 1940s. It forces him to confront the new ways of government and combat, enabled by modern technology, and apply his timeless principles of justice and liberty to them.

4. OtakusandGeeks.com: How did you prepare for writing this book? What type of research did you do?

Mark D.White: This was the best part: I reread (and in some cases read for the first time) every issue of Captain America and Avengers, and also the various crossover events and guest appearances, taking notes on every mention or display of principled behavior. Then I worked up the most significant ones into the book, along with classic source material from philosophy. It was hard work, but someone has to do it!

5. OtakusandGeeks.com: In the book some of your central themes are about virtues and morality, and how all of us regardless of our differences share basic values. What do you hope readers to take away from this book?

Mark D. White: Exactly that! Seriously, I hope they see that there’s nothing old-fashioned about an ethics based on virtue, duty, and principle, because these ideas are of no use to us without using judgment based on context and circumstances, which keeps them modern and relevant. Also, I hope readers will see that they have more in common with people on “the other side of the aisle” than they might think, which I believe will make political debate more civil and productive.

6. OtakusandGeeks.com:Without giving too much away from your book how is Captain America a symbol for people in this era?

Mark D. White: It’s not giving anything away! It’s the same ideas I emphasized above: he shows how we can apply timeless ethical virtues and principles in changing times by using our moral judgment, and he also shows how we can rise above partisan divisiveness by focusing on shared core ideals such as justice, equality, and liberty.

7.  OtakusandGeeks.com: One thing we love about Cap is that no matter how much the world changes his ideals, his moral code never waivers. It's kind of similar to the basic principles for not just Americans but people all over the world. Is this something you're trying to get across in the book?

Mark D. White: Definitely – Cap learned these ideals and principles as an American, but doesn’t believe they are exclusively American ideals. He consistently applies them to everybody around the world, and also holds our elected leaders to these principles when dealing with the rest of the world.

8. OtakusandGeeks.com: Since this book has a relation to a superhero what are your thoughts on how big superheroes and the values, moral code has shaped generations?

Mark D. White: I think superheroes are just one element in popular culture, along with literature, television, and movies, that subtly impart moral ideas to people. Given the increasing popularity of superheroes today, due primarily to the success of the Marvel movies, I think their influence as role models may be rising as well.

9. OtakusandGeeks.com: How important are superheroes in today's society with everything being accessible from social media? We're exposed so much to things now that we would never have years ago?

Mark D. White: I don’t know if we’re exposed to more things as much as we’re exposed to them in different ways. For instance, comic books used to sell millions of copies each, whereas selling 100,000 issues of a comic book today is spectacular. But you could argue that comic book superheroes are better known today than ever, given not only social media but also the various other media in which they’re showcased, especially movies and TV.
