Interview With Michael Mollo (Composer Of Strider HD)

We had a chat with composer Michael Mollo about his latest protect Strider HD for PSN and XBL. We talk about his beginnings and challenges of composing.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Can you tell us the moment that you fell in love with music and what inspired you to choose this profession?

Michael Mollo: I've had music in my life for as long as I can remember. There was an old piano in my house growing up and my grandmother sang shows tunes for most of day while she looked after me. She would also take me with her to church on Sunday to sit up in the balcony with the choir and try to follow along in the hymnal. The Catholicism never took but the music sure did. My whole life, my dad played the guitar as well. We were always listening to the Beatles, Paul Simon and The Allman Brothers etc. It was just natural that music was a part of our everyday lives. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a rock star, like serious Jimi Hendrix style. After high school I also knew I wanted to go to college. The natural step was to become a music major and that led me to discover music composition. I also remember the day when my music theory professor gave me a D on my Beethoven assignment because it sounded too much like Danny Elfman. That was probably the day I decided to pursue music for films and games.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Is there any other genre of music that you would like to try?
Michael Mollo: I consider myself a student of sound. There isn’t much music that I don’t like or at least respect. When I take on a project I try to make sure I can explore some new avenue of music that I have yet to try. That way I can always bring a fresh perspective. I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to work on a number of really cool films. For ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ we recorded 15 bagpipes and a bunch of penny whistles at Sony. For ‘Rio’ we brought in 12 Brazilian percussionists to FOX for some authentic samba school grooves. I love exploring new music. I have a thriller film project coming up and the filmmakers are really into Philip Glass, so I’m really excited about that right now. So yes I’m always excited about trying new things.

OtakusandGeeks.com:"Strider HD" is your latest video game soundtrack. Can you tell us on how you came abroad to work on this project?

Michael Mollo: My involvement began in November 2012 when I was working on the film ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness.’ I was doing some synth programming and arranging with composer Michael Giacchino at the time. Michael had worked with the Head of Studio for Double Helix, Patrick Gilmore on the ‘Medal of Honor’ series and when Patrick reached out to him for some help, he forwarded Patrick to me. I went down to Orange County and met the team and then spent a few weeks demoing some new materials for the game. The guys at Double Helix really had a passion for Strider and I was glad to get to work with them on this game.

OtakusandGeeks.com: What is the difference between working on a video game soundtrack that has had a previous soundtrack oppose to composing an original work for a video game?

Michael Mollo: Strider is my first game soundtrack so I can’t really comment but I’ve worked on enough projects without previous material to say that the inspiration always comes from the source material and the team you are working with. Film directors like design directors at a game studio are generally very invested in the sound for their projects. They often listen to music throughout their own creative process so when I’m brought on to a project, there is already a good deal of information to start with. It is their input which gives the general direction so whether I’m starting with source material or not, the project always dictates the music. That is exciting because inevitably every project throws different curve balls and I am constantly discovering new ways to solve musical problems.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Since ‘Strider’ had a previous soundtrack did you get much freedom on how you wanted to do the soundtrack?

Michael Mollo: Double Helix really wanted the music to be true to its roots. Every aspect of their development was targeted towards hardcore Strider fans. It was really important that we embrace the nostalgia of the previous games. That said, we also wanted to add to the experience and bring ‘Strider’ into the 21st century. A lot of early game music was a precursor to the electronic genres of today so I knew the score was going to be heavily electronics and synth based. We also knew that the game had to be incredibly fast paced, and the music would be key to helping mold the gameplay experience. But even with all of those parameters, I still felt very free to explore the music for this game from a fresh perspective.

OtakusandGeeks.com: What were some of the challenges of working on this project?
Michael Mollo:The biggest challenge for me was how to create something new and fresh while still paying homage to the original material. I spent a good deal of time digging thru the back catalog of ‘Strider’ materials and also listening to some of the other chip tune and early game composers. I felt it was important to really synthesize how these composers were creating their tunes and adapt that process to the new ’Strider’ material. Taking all of that info and applying it to modern arrangements was a challenge because i never wanted to stray very far from the original tracks. But I spent a good deal of time crafting and creating new synth sounds that were retro but also modern. Therein was probably the biggest challenge.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Did you feel any pressure composing for the remastered ‘Strider HD’?

Michael Mollo: I played ‘Strider’ on NES as a kid so I knew some the tunes already. When I first started on the game, I was very excited, but also a little nervous. ‘Strider’ has a great heritage of music and I knew that if I was going to contribute to the legacy, the music really had to fit with the existing materials. The original composer Junko Tamiya composed some great melodies atop some whacked out harmonies. Its such a great combo. I really wanted the new material I was writing to blend in with the complexity she created. So yes there was a ton of pressure, most of it self imposed. But the guys at Double Helix gave great feedback a long the way and together I think we really created something both unique and reverent at the same time.

OtakusandGeeks.com: As a videogame composer do you play any videogames yourself? If so what are you currently playing?
Michael Mollo: I played a lot as a kid on NES and SNES. I also dumped a good deal of my allowance into the arcades each week. My gaming dropped off when I got into music for a long time but I’ve come back to it every now and again. I’m not much of a strategy or FPS guy but every once in a while a game comes along that gets me interested. A year or two ago I got into ‘Thomas Was Alone.’ I thought David Housden’s soundtrack was really compelling and I just played a couple of really cool Indie games while at GDC this year, so I look forward to those coming out soon. I also enjoy anything I can play on the PS4 with my little girls.

Worth Review

What happens to a hero when he becomes obselete? What happens to a hero when the praise and spotlight is taken away? What happens to a hero when he loses everything he holds dear? What happens to a hero when he loses faith in himself? These questions are raised and answered in the new graphic novel series "Worth." The new graphic novel is created by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

Story - Grant Worth, Motor City’s most iconic hero. During the 1960’s, Worth’s ability to control machines made him a legend in Detroit. But when society’s technological advancements cause Worth’s power to become obsolete, he is forced to find out what happens when a superhero can no longer be super. I must say that I really enjoyed the concept and story of Worth Chapter 1. This is more of a character driven story, rather than an all action comic book. The protagonist of Grant Worth is something many people can relate too. He is a man just trying to do what's right, however situations happen that leave him broke, alone and a shell of his former self. As I was reading this I related Grant's character to those of famous Hollywood actors, who fell from the spotlight. Imagine a life where you're praised, beloved by many people and as the years pass you become obselete. It's hard thing to deal with for anybody in that position. However in this case instead of the Hollywood lifestyle it's the superhero lifestyle. Grant's Worth powers is the ability to communicate with machines. However as technology advanced he wasn't able to adapt to the new forms of technology which made him obselete. It's pretty heartbreaking to see Grant go from beloved hero to a has been. The story is written very well and the pacing is just right. I love the central theme of a hero falling from grace, and the philosphy of whether we as humans are too dependable on technology. Worth raises a lot of social issues on technology and it's not shy to tell you where it stands on both perspectives. This is a story that you are going to want to check out.

Scooby Doo Wrestlemania Mystery Review

What happens when you combine one of the most iconic cartoon characters, with the most iconic wrestling company of all time? Believe it or not you get one of the most entertaining Scooby Doo mystery in years. Fans of the classic Scooby Doo mysteries will be happy with the new installment. When Shaggy and Scooby win tickets to WWE's WrestleMania, the entire gang travel to WWE City. However, when a monster appears and threatens to ruin the event, Scooby and the gang enlist the help of the WWE superstars, including John Cena, Brodus Clay, AJ Lee, Triple H, The Miz, Kane, Santino Marella, Sin Cara and Mr. McMahon, to help them solve the mystery.

What makes this Scooby Doo entry a good one is the old school feel you get. Remember those Scooby Doo movies with Batman and Robin, Don Knotts and many more? This movie carries that same feel with the WWE Superstars. The film doesn't overdo it with guest appearances. Instead it has a nice balance of the Scooby and the gang and the WWE Superstars. The story is what you expect from a Scooby Doo movie. It follows the same formula of a spooky ghost terrorizing a town only this town is WWE City. WWE City is a city full of WWE Superstars, stores and many more. Think of it of a place where every fan of the WWE Universe would want to live. While the story is your Scooby Doo blueprint, it does pack tons of action, silly gags that the whole family will enjoy. Scooby Doo Wrestlemania Mystery is worth checking out.

L'Arc~en~Ciel Make Annoucements At Tokyo's National Olympic Stadium Concert

On Saturday March 24 2014, I had the pleasure once again to watch L'Arc~en~Ciel in concert. I first saw them in 2012 for they live tour when they played in Madison Square Garden. This time I watch one of my J-Rock favorite bands on the big screen. I attended a live satellite screening of the concert in Time Square. The concert was amazing as always. Hyde and the gang really know how to put on a show. I'm happy one of favorite songs from the Butterfly album XXX was played. The concert also had a couple announcements from the band. One of the announcements is that they new single entitled "Everlasting" will be released on August 13th. The new single was the closing song of the concert and trust me it's awesome. Another announcement is that the concert will be available this fall for those who missed it. Finally L'Arc~en~Ciel will be releasing a new documentary about they 2012 world tour. The documentary is due to be released late December. One more thing to add about the concert is Tetsuya has green hair. It actually looks really good on him.

Aniplex of America Acquires Four Anime Titles for Their Spring Lineup

Aniplex of America Inc. has announced at their industry panel at Anime Boston that they have acquired four highly-anticipated titles for this upcoming spring season. These titles are MEKAKUCITY ACTORS, The irregular at magic high school a.k.a “Mahouka,” Nanana’s Buried Treasure and MUSHI-SHI (sequel series). These titles will all begin streaming this April. The streaming schedule will be announced at a later date along with detailed information on which streaming websites these titles will be available for viewing.

About The irregular at magic high school:
Magic--A century has passed since this concept has been recognized as a formal technology instead of the product of the occult or folklore. The season is spring and it is time for a brand new school year. At the National Magic University First Affiliate High School, A.K.A Magic High School, students are divided into two distinct groups according to their academic performances. The “Bloom,” who demonstrate the highest grades and are enrolled in the “First Course,” and the “Weed,”who havepoor academic recordsand are enrolled in the “Second Course.” This spring, a very peculiar brother and sister enroll as new students. The brother is an underachiever with some deficiencies and enrolls as a “Weed,” while his younger sister is an honor student, who enrolls as a “Bloom.” The brother, with a somewhat philosophical expression, and the younger sister who holds feelings a little stronger than sibling love for him… Ever since these two have entered through the gates of this prestigious school, the calm campus was beginning to change...

About MUSHI-SHI:
The popular title is back! They existed long before anyone can remember. They are simple and strange in nature, not resembling any other plant or animal in this world. In ancient times, people revered these bizarre creatures and called them “Mushi.” People once again began to believe in the existence of these “Mushi”when they began affecting their lives in inexplicable ways. The one who connects the world of “Mushi”to the world of humans—they were called the “Mushi-shi.” All life exists not to hinder others in this world. They are simply there to live as they were meant to.

About MEKAKUCITY ACTORS:
The incidents which occurred on August 14th and 15th bring a group of young boys and girls together… They are members of a group they call themselves the “Mekakushi Dan” (Blindfold Organization) and each member possesses a strange power involving their eyes. The Raid 2 Review

The Raid 2 Review "The Raid 2" or what I like to call it "The Raid Redemption 2" returns with the follow up to the smash hit the The Raid. Actor Iko Uwais returns as rookie cop Rama who survived the first raid. With a fresh new story, darker tone and brand new advesary does The Raid two hold up to it's precessor? Or is this light's out for the franchise?

Story - He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen - a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls - rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn't have been more wrong. Formidable though they may have been, Rama's opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap. And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender "Yuda." In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco - the son of a prominent gang kingpin - to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

If you're familiar with the storytelling structure of The Raid franchise then you know it's mostly style over substance. The story takes a backseat to the film while the action is mainly the focus. However this isn't a bad thing when it comes to this film. The film knows who it's audience is and what they want to see. The sequel picks up a few years after the first film. Rama is under the command of an undercover division of the police force, since he is a mark man for his actions in the first film his family is in jeopardy. As stated in the synoposis above Rama is sent to prison to gain the respect of Uco the son a kingpin connected to recent crimes. This line of undercover work leaves Rama distant for years from his family. I wish the film included more scenes of the consequences of Rama being distant from his wife and son. The film shows one of two scenes of how Rama misses his family, reaching out to her to see if she was safe. However it would have been great to see more on they relationship and the effects of Rama's profession has on his family. With a running time of 2 hours and 30 minutes there was plently of time to flush out Rama's story arc. Instead the character development portion is focused on the antagonist Uco and his relationship with his mafia father. While I did enjoy seeing Uco trying to gain acceptance from his father, I would have prefer to see more Rama's family in the spotlight. Minus my complaint of not seeing more of Rama's development, and characters coming and going without you being invested into them. This movie is entertaining as hell. Overall the story is simple and nothing really groundbreaking that you haven't seen before. It's has a basic identity of good guys vs the bad guys everything is black and white. Rama's doesn't really suffer from any consequences of his decisions and the cool characters like Hammer Girl don't get enough screentime or backstory. As stated earlier you don't go to see The Raid for story, you go to The Raid for action. The action is what makes The Raid 2 one of the best and violent action films of 2014.

Acting - Iko Uwais returns as Rama and he is impressive as ever. His expressions, delivery and fighting is great to see. Julie Estelle as Hammer Girl is the show stealer in every scene she was in. She didn't have much to do in the film. However when she is on screen she gives you a sense of fear that she is not to be messed with. I wanted more Estelle's character and more development to find out how did she end up in that line of work. One more mention is Afirin Putra as Uco. Putra is a great antagonist to Uwais Rama. He is what I like in a villain he's smooth, driven and has a motive that isn't over the top. Putra did a great job showing a young man driven to be a kingpin, but pull back the layers you get a man just wanting acceptance. I thought that was a great portrayal for the character.

Julie Estelle as Hammer Girl

Music/Filmmaking - The music is fantastic in The Raid 2. One thing an action film relies on to keep the audience emerse is the soundtrack. The Raid 2 composition fits the tone of the movie, it's dark, tense and keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you can find the OST I reccommend you give it a listen. When it comes to filmmaking I have to give a round appaluse to the entire staff. The Raid 2 action sequences not only tops the first one but might have set the bar for martial arts films coming out.

Final Thoughts - If your looking for a deep character journey you might want to skip The Raid 2. The Raid 2 knows its audience and what they want and it's not a shame about it. This is a sequel that delivers in the action and it's an adreline rush from start to finish. It's truly a crowd pleaser for fans of the genre.

I just hope one day they can make this thing actually work.

2014 Tribeca Film Festival to announce Closing Night “Begin Again”

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by AT&T, announced today that John Carney’s comedy, Begin Again (formerly Can A Song Save Your Life?), starring Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, and Adam Levine, will close the 13th edition on Saturday, April 26th at BMCC Tribeca PAC.

From writer-director John Carney (Once),Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City. The film will be released by The Weinstein Company in July.

Lenni Reviews: Homer Simpson's Little Book of Laziness and Bart Simpson's Manual of Mischief

These two books (which are kind enough to completely date me as the old lady who remembers when this show first came out) are a Simpson's fan/collector's dream. They are chock full jokes, stickers, one liners, inside jokes, mini comics, and faux advice on how to live like your favorite character. But if you're not a huge fan, I can't see reading these more than once.

As a collectors item, these are awesome. Books like these - character specific and with a ton of pullouts - are perfect to leaf through with the reverence of a true fan, then put them back on the shelf for the next time you get the urge to read them. As for me, I got a good chuckle, a deep sense of nostalgia, then put them away lest I lose one of those free flying pieces of paper.

As a total aside: The librarian in me is horrified by the loose parts in these books. They are circulation and shelving nightmares as we are not getting half of those little inserts back the first time that book is borrowed. I know these books are for collectors but those are gonna disappear from the book in no time.

To sum up; these are cute but fleeting and designed to not be opened very often. Reserve for true fans everywhere. You know who you are.
