The Raid 2 Review

The Raid 2 Review "The Raid 2" or what I like to call it "The Raid Redemption 2" returns with the follow up to the smash hit the The Raid. Actor Iko Uwais returns as rookie cop Rama who survived the first raid. With a fresh new story, darker tone and brand new advesary does The Raid two hold up to it's precessor? Or is this light's out for the franchise?

Story - He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen - a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls - rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn't have been more wrong. Formidable though they may have been, Rama's opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap. And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender "Yuda." In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco - the son of a prominent gang kingpin - to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

If you're familiar with the storytelling structure of The Raid franchise then you know it's mostly style over substance. The story takes a backseat to the film while the action is mainly the focus. However this isn't a bad thing when it comes to this film. The film knows who it's audience is and what they want to see. The sequel picks up a few years after the first film. Rama is under the command of an undercover division of the police force, since he is a mark man for his actions in the first film his family is in jeopardy. As stated in the synoposis above Rama is sent to prison to gain the respect of Uco the son a kingpin connected to recent crimes. This line of undercover work leaves Rama distant for years from his family. I wish the film included more scenes of the consequences of Rama being distant from his wife and son. The film shows one of two scenes of how Rama misses his family, reaching out to her to see if she was safe. However it would have been great to see more on they relationship and the effects of Rama's profession has on his family. With a running time of 2 hours and 30 minutes there was plently of time to flush out Rama's story arc. Instead the character development portion is focused on the antagonist Uco and his relationship with his mafia father. While I did enjoy seeing Uco trying to gain acceptance from his father, I would have prefer to see more Rama's family in the spotlight. Minus my complaint of not seeing more of Rama's development, and characters coming and going without you being invested into them. This movie is entertaining as hell. Overall the story is simple and nothing really groundbreaking that you haven't seen before. It's has a basic identity of good guys vs the bad guys everything is black and white. Rama's doesn't really suffer from any consequences of his decisions and the cool characters like Hammer Girl don't get enough screentime or backstory. As stated earlier you don't go to see The Raid for story, you go to The Raid for action. The action is what makes The Raid 2 one of the best and violent action films of 2014.

Acting - Iko Uwais returns as Rama and he is impressive as ever. His expressions, delivery and fighting is great to see. Julie Estelle as Hammer Girl is the show stealer in every scene she was in. She didn't have much to do in the film. However when she is on screen she gives you a sense of fear that she is not to be messed with. I wanted more Estelle's character and more development to find out how did she end up in that line of work. One more mention is Afirin Putra as Uco. Putra is a great antagonist to Uwais Rama. He is what I like in a villain he's smooth, driven and has a motive that isn't over the top. Putra did a great job showing a young man driven to be a kingpin, but pull back the layers you get a man just wanting acceptance. I thought that was a great portrayal for the character.

Julie Estelle as Hammer Girl

Music/Filmmaking - The music is fantastic in The Raid 2. One thing an action film relies on to keep the audience emerse is the soundtrack. The Raid 2 composition fits the tone of the movie, it's dark, tense and keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you can find the OST I reccommend you give it a listen. When it comes to filmmaking I have to give a round appaluse to the entire staff. The Raid 2 action sequences not only tops the first one but might have set the bar for martial arts films coming out.

Final Thoughts - If your looking for a deep character journey you might want to skip The Raid 2. The Raid 2 knows its audience and what they want and it's not a shame about it. This is a sequel that delivers in the action and it's an adreline rush from start to finish. It's truly a crowd pleaser for fans of the genre.

As a child watching anime Macross/Robotech was one of my favorite franchises of them all. I always dreamed of piloting one of the mechs and soaring the skies. Today The Chiba Institute revealed a life size model of the VF-25. Fans of Macross will know that this mech was piloted by Alto Saotome. Check out the photos below. I just hope one day they can make this thing actually work.

2014 Tribeca Film Festival to announce Closing Night “Begin Again”

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by AT&T, announced today that John Carney’s comedy, Begin Again (formerly Can A Song Save Your Life?), starring Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfeld, and Adam Levine, will close the 13th edition on Saturday, April 26th at BMCC Tribeca PAC.

From writer-director John Carney (Once),Begin Again is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City. The film will be released by The Weinstein Company in July.

Food Chains
Directed by Sanjay Rawal. (USA) – North American Premiere. Executive produced by Eva Longoria, this hard hitting documentary gives pause for thought with every plate of food we eat by exposing the rampant abuse and injustice embedded in America’s agriculture and food production industries.  The film sheds light on the wage theft, physical abuse and outright slavery that constitutes everyday life for thousands of America’s (mostly Latino) farm workers, and gives voice to those fighting to change these practices and bring justice to the table.
After the Movie: Join Executive Producer Eva Longoria, director, Sanjay Rawal, Kerry Kennedy, Eric Schlosser and a representative from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to learn more about behind the scenes in America’s food chain and what you can do to be part of the food justice revolution.

Supermensch
Directed by Mike Myers. (USA) – U.S. Premiere. In his directorial debut, Mike Myers brings a comic touch to documenting the astounding career of consummate Hollywood insider Shep Gordon. Making playful use of archival footage, new interviews, and his own close relationship with the legendary talent manager, Myers reveals a man who has embraced his dualities: a hard-driving dealmaker who wants everyone to be happy and a rock ‘n’ roll hedonist who yearns for a family. Against a backdrop of debauchery, he’s a man on a spiritual quest. These contradictions make him a fascinating documentary subject.
After the Movie: Stay for a conversation with Shep Gordon, Michael Douglas for some inside baseball Hollywood stories.

A flawless example of when the personal meets the political, with incredible “bare all” access, this documentary reveals Frank as one of the most sharp-tongued, entertaining, and lionhearted politicians of our time.

Stories by Numbers

But does betting on the ‘wisdom of crowds’ bode well or ill for future innovation in film, art and journalism? True believers and tech skeptics square off. Join show runner/writer Beau Willimon (“House of Cards”), writer David Simon (“The Wire”), Thompson on Hollywood’s Anne Thompson, and a special guest from ESPN/FiveThirtyEight.com. Lenni Reviews: Homer Simpson's Little Book of Laziness and Bart Simpson's Manual of Mischief

These two books (which are kind enough to completely date me as the old lady who remembers when this show first came out) are a Simpson's fan/collector's dream. They are chock full jokes, stickers, one liners, inside jokes, mini comics, and faux advice on how to live like your favorite character. But if you're not a huge fan, I can't see reading these more than once.

As a collectors item, these are awesome. Books like these - character specific and with a ton of pullouts - are perfect to leaf through with the reverence of a true fan, then put them back on the shelf for the next time you get the urge to read them. As for me, I got a good chuckle, a deep sense of nostalgia, then put them away lest I lose one of those free flying pieces of paper.

As a total aside: The librarian in me is horrified by the loose parts in these books. They are circulation and shelving nightmares as we are not getting half of those little inserts back the first time that book is borrowed. I know these books are for collectors but those are gonna disappear from the book in no time.

To sum up; these are cute but fleeting and designed to not be opened very often. Reserve for true fans everywhere. You know who you are.

2014 Tribeca Film Festival Announces Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival Lineup

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by AT&T, today announced the lineup for the eighth annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival, sponsored by Mohegan Sun. The Sports Festival was founded to broaden the audience for independent film through stories about sports and competition. The program includes feature and short films, an outdoor screening, special conversations, and an ESPN Films 30 for 30 program on soccer. The 2014 Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival will run during the 13th edition of TFF, taking place April 16 – April 27 at locations around New York City. TRIBECA/ESPN SPORTS FILM FESTIVAL

Gala
•When the Garden was Eden, directed by Michael Rapaport. (USA) – World Premiere. Actor Michael Rapaport delivers an unabashed love note to the Knicks with this fast-moving tribute to the team’s glory days. Featuring interviews with Walt “Clyde” Frazier, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Phil Jackson and others connected to the team’s championship years, When the Garden was Eden is a snapshot of a colorful and volatile era in New York history and a testament to the breathless energy that defines the city and its sporting heroes.

The following Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival titles have been announced in their respective sections as part of the 2014 TFF film program:

•Intramural, directed by Andrew Disney, written by Bradley Jackson. (USA) – World Premiere, Narrative. There comes a time in every fifth-year senior’s life where they must either accept the impending ‘real world’ of jobs, marriage, and payment plans or shirk that responsibility in favor of playing the most glorious intramural football game your school probably doesn’t really care to see. In this full throttle and hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies, director Andrew Disney harnesses every cliché and overused trope to tell the greatest (and only) intramural sports movie of all time. Featuring an ensemble cast including Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoah, Jake Lacy, Beck Bennett, and Nikki Reed.

•Maravilla, directed and written by Juan Pablo Cadaveira. (Argentina) – International Premiere. A true underdog story,Maravilla follows Argentinian boxer Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez, as he sets out to reclaim the title of Middleweight champion that was unfairly snatched from him in 2011 by Julio Chavez, Jr. Focusing on the rise of Martinez from penniless amateur to world champion and sporting celebrity, director Juan Pablo Cadaveira offers a fascinating glimpse into today’s boxing landscape, revealing the politics of the sporting profession that often places entertainment value over the sport itself. In English and Spanish with subtitles

•Slaying the Badger, directed and written by John Dower. (UK) – World Premiere. Before Lance Armstrong, there was Greg LeMond, who was the first and only American to officially win the Tour de France. In this engrossing documentary, LeMond looks back at the pivotal 1986 Tour, and his increasingly vicious rivalry with friend, teammate, and mentor Bernard Hinault. The reigning Tour champion and brutal competitor known as “The Badger,” Hinault ‘promised’ to help LeMond to his first victory in return for LeMond supporting him in the previous year. But in a sport that purports to reward teamwork, it’s really every man for himself.

Tribeca Talks: After the Movie and Conversations
•Tribeca Talks: After the Movie
Champs, directed by Bert Marcus. (USA) – World Premiere. This insightful and provocative documentary charts the lives of some of America’s heaviest hitters—including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Bernard Hopkins—as they seek to break out of poverty via one of the few outlets available. Bert Marcus skillfully weaves their personal histories and gripping footage from their biggest bouts to explore the meaning of the American dream in a society increasingly fragmented between rich and poor.

After the movie: Stay for a conversation with former boxers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, and boxing promoter Lou DiBella, about life, rivalry, and conflict both inside and out of the ring.

•Special Conversation
Shooting and Scoring
A conversation about the particular art in creating authentic sports stories - from non-fiction material to heart stopping hits that satisfy hardcore fans while also connecting with broader audiences. Featuring director Peter Berg, best known for his hit TV series and film Friday Night Lights and for the recent sports doc series State of Play which illuminates the intersection of sports and sports culture with wider society in 2014 America.

Tribeca Drive-In
Next Goal Wins will screen as part of the Tribeca Drive-In series on April 19.  The full Tribeca Drive-In schedule will be announced in the coming days.
·         Next Goal Wins, directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. (UK) – World Premiere . When the American Samoan national soccer team suffered the world’s worst defeat, losing to Australia 31-0, these tiny islands crash-landed into last place in FIFA world rankings, and became known as “the worst team in the world.” More than a decade later, they have not yet won an official match. Next Goal Wins follows their miraculous efforts as they train for the next World Cup. Led by an eccentric new coach, they have a chance to redefine their international reputation.

Special Screening
·         The Battered Bastards of Baseball, directed and written by Chapman Way and Maclain Way. (USA) – New York Premiere. Bing Russell is best known for his role as Deputy Clem on Bonanza, but he left Hollywood in 1973 to pursue his first love: baseball. Creating the independent Portland Mavericks, his ragtag roster of players that major franchises rejected were baseball’s biggest joke. Then they shattered expectations and turned Major League Baseball on its heels in an unheralded story of spirit and rebellion.

30 for 30: Soccer Stories
Followed by a special conversation with filmmakers Ezra Edelman, Daniel Battsek and ESPN about the films and the upcoming World Cup

•The Opposition, directed by Ezra Edelman and Jeffrey Plunkett (USA/Chile) – World Premiere.   In the wake of the 1973 military coup in Chile, American-backed dictator Augusto Pinochet transformed Santiago’s National Stadium into a concentration camp where political opponents were tortured and assassinated.  Only two months later, that same stadium was scheduled to host a decisive World Cup qualifier between Chile and the Soviet Union.  Despite protests, FIFA’s own investigation, and the Soviets’ eventual boycott, the Chilean team still played the game as planned, qualifying for the 1974 World Cup on a goal scored against no one.

•Maradona '86 (TBC), directed by Sam Blair, Executive Produced by John Battsek (USA) – World Premiere. In the 1986 World Cup, Diego Armando Maradona redefined what is possible for one man to accomplish on the soccer field. Already a figure of notoriety, but with one failed World Cup behind him, Argentinian Maradona took possession of the international stage in Mexico, the spotlight rarely drifting from him as he wrote an indelible history with his feet and, of course, with a “hand from God.” Maradona ’86 is a fascinating, evocative, and operatic portrait, revealing Maradona’s inner complexity and contradictions while basking in the joy and passion of his performance on the pitch, as he wrote his name into soccer history forever.

Short Film
•True Gladiators, directed by Kevin Donovan (USA) – World Premiere.  Follows the career of three former American Gladiators and how they deal with the demands of the show, the injuries, and their personal lives.

Jim Kalafat was a tough kid from a small town in Montana who dreamed of playing for the NFL.  His prodigious skills as a linebacker led him all the way to the Los Angeles Rams, where he met fellow teammate Dan Clark.  After suffering career-ending injuries, the two best friends used their athleticism, broad smiles and gift for gab to become the muscular, ass-kicking, heartthrob stars “Laser” and “Nitro” on the hit ‘90s television show American Gladiators.  Joined by Mr. America 1989, Steve Henneberry, a.k.a. “Tower”, the three battle-scarred gladiators reveal what went on behind the scenes of one of the most popular syndicated “sports” shows in history.

Color Cablest Review

Color Cablest brings to us a very cool unique way to having a cool effect on our cable wires. The company presents a way for our USB cables, I-Phone charges and more to basically glow in the dark. It's very simple and easy to do. The cables are infused with photo-luminescence that gives them a renewable glow and keeps them easy to find and identify which cable is connected to what. This makes the glow effect easy to obtain. All you have to do is keep your cables under a light source such as a lamp, sunlight or anything that gives off light. It's best to keep the cables under a light source for at least three hours to really show off the glow effect. The best thing about these cables you don't need an outlet to plug into to get the glow effect. The glow comes from natural light sources that you can get from anywhere. One more notable mention is that cables are very hard to tangle. I combine all the cables together and see if they would get tangle and it was very hard to do.

Overall if you looking for a cool effect for your usb cables, I-Phone and Android chargers then Color Cablest might be the product for you. It has a cool concept and it's really nice to see your cables glow while you charge your product. I would say the only downfall, is the time it takes for the light source to give the glow it's full effect. Other than that check it out.

Atlantic City Boardwalk Con Coming In 2015

If you're a fan of comics, cosplaying, games, and all things Geek, then get ready for an awesome celebration AC Boardwalk Con 2015! AC Boardwalk Con (ACBC) will take place over the weekend of May 14-17, 2015, in Atlantic City, NJ.  This late Spring/Early Summer time frame delivers a full-fledged con experience to the East Coast at the beginning of the con season.

ACBC is brought to life by the creative team behind award-winning booth designs and event marketing campaigns for clients including Marvel and 2K Games.   "I came up with AC Boardwalk Con because my team and I have had extensive experience with exhibitors and fans through our sister company, Promoguys Marketing Group," says Michael D'Alessio, founder of AC Boardwalk Con and President of Promoguys Marketing Group.  "I developed a show that is fan-centric, but also definitively delivers the marketing opportunities, interactivity, and visibility that exhibitors and vendors want from a convention."

Offering quite a few unique add-ons that fans are sure to enjoy, as well as creating new opportunities for exhibitors to interact with the attendees and press, ACBC is adding levels to the con experience.  The show is designed to offer exhibitors further reach beyond their cement floor space, while creating a more interactive experience for the fans. ACBC is already in negotiations with some of the comic and gaming industries' major publishers, as well as with top-tier creators and celebrity guests.

Some ACBC show attributes include:

The 30,000 square foot ACBC Cosplay Ballroom Party is the ultimate Cosplayers' Party.  Realistic, panoramic backdrops for walk-up photos, celebrity Cosplayer Hosts, pop-up performances and more are just some of the happenings at the ACBC Cosplay Ballroom Party.
The ACBC UnMasked Experience is a first-come/first-served experience where celebrity guests kick back and enjoy a more intimate experience with the fans.
The ACBC High Rollers Lounge is one of the more exclusive experiences at the con.  Membership includes cocktails with celebrities in a laid back and interactive environment.  Membership is extended to only 200 attendees.

Keep an eye on the ACBC Spotlight Stages where pop-up experiences from Exhibitors, Vendors, Celebrities, and Industry Professionals take place when you least expect it.
Enroll in classes taught by industry leaders in the ACBC School for Fans. The more classes you attend, the more Con-Creds you earn.  The more Con-Creds you earn, the better your ACBC Graduation Gift will be!

The ACBC Emerging-Creator Program allows up-and-coming creators (writers, artists, developers and programmers) to have a chance of one-on-one meetings with comics and video gaming publishers and industry leaders in 15-minute segments.   This unique opportunity allows the participant to have their work reviewed in front of them, while getting direct feedback on their work.

Meet your favorite Artists in the ACBC ArtPod Experience! ArtPods position artists and their work in a gallery setting right in the midst of the Show Floor.
Cosplayers rejoice!  Private changing rooms offer more space than a phone booth and a secret lair to kick your boots off.  Emergency Repair Stations, equipped with the essentials a Cosplayer could need: sewing machines, materials, painting areas, etc. are available right in the convention center.  Become a member of the ACBC Secret Identity League and get full access during show hours.

ACBC is keeping a few cards close to their vest, especially when it comes to the hotly anticipated Grand Marshals of the ACBC Midnight Masquerade Parade down the famous AC Boardwalk!
