Top 10 Favorite Kingdom Hearts Moments and Things I Love

I am a Kingdom Hearts fangirl and for good reason. Kingdom Hearts is an RPG that anyone can get into. It has a lot of elements that fans of Final Fantasy and Disney can get behind. As soon as I saw the trailer for Kingdom Hearts back in like 2002, I knew that I had to get it. My mom even played the game and she was a gamer when I was in my mother's stomach. It brings Disney fans, like myself, and Final Fantasy fans common ground. So here are my top favorite moments and things I love about Kingdom Hearts.
                                                                   *Warning Spoilers*

10. The concept of adding two different franchises together
Who would have thought that combining two different franchises would work so well with a game. Disney is a massive company by itself and Square Enix have been on the map since forever. What happens when you cross two major companies? Epicness.

9. Moment: Sora getting excited by Santa
I think in the moments of having Sora lash out saying "And then we can go meet Santa!", makes me so happy. He sounds as if he was four years old and it adds when Santa kind of b slapped him by saying that he didn't believe in Santa. It just brings out the navie side of Sora and makes him all the more cuter.

8. Moment: Playing with Spirits
In Dream Drop Distance there are creatures called Dream Eaters that you can make and befriend during the journey of completing the Keyblade Mastery Exam. On the 3DS it was so much fun to pet, feed, and play mini games with them. Especially when you can level them up and give them certain powers. I also love the fact that you can create a giant T-Rex like Dream Eater.

7. Utada Hikaru- Kingdom Hearts Series
Utada's music has been made known to me because of her songs in the Kingdom Hearts series. I can't picture her themes in any other game instead of Kingdom Hearts. It fits perfectly with the story and I could not have it any other way. Utada, you rule and please "Come Back" to us very soon. We miss you.

6. Dream Drop Distance: Music
Dream Drop Distance had such great music and it is very different from the rest of the series especially the world where it played classical music (Fantasia). The music makes me happy, it adds pressure during boss battles, and makes me sad and reflective during serious scenes. The music in the series is awesome but I connected more with Dream Drop Distance a little more.

5. Moment: Singing The Little Mermaid songs
So going back to Atlantica was a surprising moment for I thought Sora was done with that world when King Triton couldn't wait for us to leave after finding the keyhole. Now in Kingdom Hearts 2, instead of fighting Heartless, we are fighting notes and I love it. Its a new approach and just like Winnie the Pooh's world, it is like an extra bonus level however there is a keyhole in Atlantica once again. I'm just happy that the only major threat in this world, is Ursula and I can sing along to the popular songs from The Little Mermaid.

4. Birth By Sleep

I felt that the prequel did answer some answers of the never-ending storyline but also caused us to backtrack when Dream Drop Distance came out. I love everything about Birth By Sleep especially Aqua and Vanitas. Aqua, next to Riku, is one of my favorite characters and I hope we can play her again in Kingdom Hearts 3. The reason I like Vanitas is because where he came from and how he looks so much like Sora that I did a double take when I saw him. I feel the prequel was also necessary because of the clues and puzzle pieces left behind by the other games. It was beautifully done and I want to get the Kingdom Hearts 2 and Birth By Sleep Remix for the PS3 when it comes out.

3. Moment: Being a cub in Kingdom Hearts 2
Being a lion cub is a huge deal for me because I am a HUGGGGGGGGE fangirl of The Lion King franchise, from the three movies, to seeing the Broadway play twice, to reading and writing fanfic about it. Mind you, KH2 came out in 2007, way before I started reading fanfiction and writing my own, however, I still love the franchise. As the commercial came out for this game and I saw The Lion King world, I nearly had a fangasm. I was so happy and I hope that if they are going back to the same worlds as before, Zira should make an appearance....Just saying.

2. Keyblades
Since seeing the many keyblades that both Sora and Riku (Dream Drop Distance), keyblades have come in many different shapes, and colors. Some of my favorites are Sora's and Roxas's two keyblades, Riku's keyblade, Star Seeker, and the Nightmare Before Christmas keyblade. I even dreamed of having my own Keyblade if I was ever in the series (which is often). Without Keyblades, there wouldn't be Kingdom Hearts.

1. Riku
Now you are probably wondering why Riku of all the characters from the series, is my #1 moment and thing (person) I love. There are two reasons: One he is a good-looking young man, with beautiful eyes, a good personality, and a hot body.*smirk* Two, he has a very interesting and dark storyline. I wouldn't say complex since Sora trumps every one's story lines in that category with almost everyone involved in his life.. Riku just has an edge to him I really love. I was actually a Sora fangirl before Riku but since Sora has not grown out of his naive state just yet, I grew into loving Riku especially in Dream Drop Distance (which I mean Dream Drop Sexiness). ^-^

Those are just the Top 10 for I have a lot more to talk about (look at our latest Podcast "It's An Otaku Thing". What are your top 10 favorite moments and things you love about the Kingdom Hearts series. Let us know on the comments below this post. Kingdom Hearts Rule!!!!!!!!!!!!

RWBY Anime

Hey Otakus and Geeks fans, I just finished watching a few episodes of an anime by Rooster Teeth called RWBY. This anime is visually stunning and a pretty good story so far. As always we have a brief synopsis and trailers of the four characters. The episodes are on youtube, so check it out and tell us what you think.

RWBY: (pronounced "Ruby") is a CG-animated web-series created by the Rooster Teeth Productions' animation studio. The series is created and directed by animator Monty Oum. Episodes are released every Thursday on Rooster Teeth's website and simulcasted on Crunchyroll. One week after release they are also uploaded to YouTube. The first episode of RWBY premiered on July 5, 2013 at RTX 2013 and was released on the Rooster Teeth site on July 18, 2013.

PLOT:  The story takes place in the world of Remnant, which is filled with supernatural forces and shadowy creatures known as the "Creatures of Grimm". Prior to the events of the series, mankind waged a battle of survival against the Grimm before discovering the power of a mysterious element called Dust, which allowed them to fight back against the monsters. In the present day, Dust is used to power magical abilities and weapons. Those who use these abilities to battle the Grimm are known as Huntsmen or Huntresses. The series focuses on four girls, each with her own unique weapon and powers. Together, they form a team at Beacon Academy in the city of Vale, where they are trained to become Huntresses alongside other similar teams.

The Raid 2 Trailer

Check out the all new trailer for "The Raid 2 (The Raid Redemption 2)." I' am a huge fan of the previous installment "The Raid" this one looks even better and epic.

Synopsis: He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen - a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls - rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn't have been more wrong. Formidable though they may have been, Rama's opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap. And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender "Yuda." In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco - the son of a prominent gang kingpin - to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end. Starring Iko Uwais, Arifin Putra, Tio Pakusadewo, Oka Antara, Julie Estelle and directed by Gareth Evans, this action-packed feature film will hit theaters on March 28, 2014!

Indie Comics Spotlight #1: Ragdoll

This is a new thing we will be doing at Otakus & Geeks. From time to time we'll be showcasing independent comics or webcomics that we find on the web. To kick this new feature off on the site we read a comic online called "Ragdoll." As described on the website Ragdoll is a surreal journey through the minds of living dolls and broken slaves, and an exploration of what it truly means to be free; a sprawling epic that spans time and space, sex and death, life and imagination. We have an interview with the creator Melody Herbert and some stills for you.

Otakus & Geeks: Let start from the beginning. Can you tell us a little about yourself and when did you first fall in love with the art of storytelling and comics?

Melody Herbert: Let's see... I'm a Taurus, I play guitar, and I have Dissociative Identity Disorder, more commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. I fell in love with storytelling during childhood. Making up stories and fantasy worlds for myself was a way to escape the terror of my everyday life. I learned to read around the age of 3, and devoured books. I always loved cartoons, and television in general, and I grew up watching stuff like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Star Trek. I developed a growing obsession for horror movies during the mid 1980's, then was introduced to comics in the early 1990's. I was probably 15 years old before I bought my first comic book. It started with Itchy and Scratchy #1 and Simpsons #1, actually. Then Vertigo titles like Hellblazer and Sandman. Then came manga, like Ranma 1/2 and Blade of the Immortal. EC Comics reprints were everywhere in those days, too, and I started an extensive collection of those. After awhile, that wasn't enough, and I started reading superhero titles, namely Wonder Woman and X-Men. But the comic that most inspired me to become an illustrator was definitely Kabuki. That book made me realize just how versatile sequential storytelling can be.

Otakus & Geeks:  How long have you been writing and drawing?

Melody Herbert: I've been writing for as long as I've been able to competently hold a pencil. However, I didn't even think about becoming an artist until I was in high school. I never took any art classes, and didn't even start drawing seriously until 11th grade. When I was 17, Ragdoll was born as prose, and I had to learn to draw the story. So I began studying every comic I could get my hands on, and practicing constantly. I carried a sketchbook with me everywhere, and it probably annoyed my friends at the time, but I was relentless in teaching myself how to draw.

Otakus & Geeks: Do you remember the first time the concept of “Ragdoll” came together?

Melody Herbert: Ragdoll was a character I was doodling to pass the time in study hall. I had no idea who she was or what she was for. Then one night while I was at home, circa 1995, I was listening to Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral, on my walkman. More specifically, the song "I Do Not Want This". When the lyrics "I have lived so many lives all in my head" penetrated my ears in that moment, I literally jumped out of bed, and scrambled for a notebook. The original novel version of Ragdoll poured out of me like water, and through revision after revision, I've never stopped working on it since.

Otakus & Geeks: Is there any special meaning to the title “Ragdoll”?

Melody Herbert: Honestly, no. It's just what the character is. It's a tentative title that's stuck for 20 years. Though it seems most appropriate with the themes of abuse and helplessness.

Otakus & Geeks: What are some of the challenges you faced creating this universe? How did you decide on the characters, theme, etc?

Melody Herbert: Creating this universe was merely an inward turning of my consciousness, and recording what I find there. It's a reflection of my inner mind/s. Being as such, the challenges I've faced have been outward manifestations of the story itself; strange parallels between Ragdoll and my real life, that physically get in the way of my work. The characters are caricatures of my alter egos. In working through my Dissociate Identity Disorder, I've found that this epic story I've written is a road map to my sanity.

Otakus & Geeks: You’re not only the writer but also the illustrator of “Ragdoll”. Can you tell us a little bit of your writing and illustration process?

Melody Herbert: The process of creating this book has to be very systematic. It's a bit like building a house. The plot is the foundation of the whole thing, and had to be finished first. Layouts and scripts happen simultaneously. The layouts are the hardest part of the process because I'm essentially creating something from nothing; creating a dynamic visual representation out of plot text, all the while keeping up a typed version of the final script as well as handwritten word balloons on the layouts themselves. I'll do layouts for several issues in advance before I begin penciling. I try to pencil only one page at a time (and in order) but it doesn't always happen that way. I won't ignore a sudden creative impulse to jump ahead to a splash page if necessary. Sometimes panel perspectives will change during the final pencils, and lines of text may change during lettering. I no longer ink my work. I found it to be time-consuming and somewhat pointless, since my scanner picks up pencil lines just fine. Once the finished page is scanned, I add grey tones and letters digitally. Additionally, my emotional process during creation is similarly systematic, and I've found a sort of depression that comes directly after finishing an issue, which usually spurns me on the get started on the next one as soon as possible.

Otakus & Geeks: The central theme we picked up from reading the issues is freedom. The character of Mia seems to voice this the most. When we first are introduced to Mia, she’s in a dark place mentally. How did you come up with the character of Mia?

Melody Herbert: Mia is a version of myself that perished long ago; a dormant alter ego that will likely never reawaken. She represents a part of myself that I allowed to be victimized growing up, and her liberation through death represents the awakening of creative consciousness I experienced in my early 20's.

Otakus & Geeks: Without giving any spoilers can tell us a little bit more of what you have coming in Ragdoll?

Melody Herbert: Now, now... why just give you something you want, when I can make you beg for it?

Otakus & Geeks: How can people reach you via Twitter, Facebook, etc?

Melody Herbert: Well, visiting the official website is encouraged:

Also:
about.me/ragdollcomics
facebook.com/ragdollcomics
twitter.com/ragdollcomics

Otakus & Geeks: Any final words?

Melody Herbert: Keep reading! If you like the story, spread the word. It goes without saying (or maybe it doesn't) the more people that start reading this book, the more time I'll be able to devote to it. Like 99% of the comic book artists and writers in this country, I'm supporting myself with a day job, and losing a bit more of my soul to the machine every day. No pressure...

Lenni Reviews: Book VS Movie - Flowers in the Attic

Hearing about Lifetime's new movie, I rushed out to read the book. By the time the movie aired, I was halfway through the second book. So my advice is to read the books as well, if you can. They are powerful and heart-wrenching.

Sadly, the movie is less so. Mild spoilers ahead as well.

This is not to say the movie isn't enjoyable but after reading the book, a lot was lost. In the book, you can feel the children wilting in that attic as they wait for their mother to come save them. In the movie? It was rushed. You blink and a year has gone by. Certain instances like the tar in Cathy's hair and the first kiss between her and her brother, Christopher but getting there was jarring; like hopping through the book.

The movie also paints the Grandmother as a much more sympathetic figure. In the book; she's an imposing, emotionless statue, delighting in squashing any hint of impropriety and barely thinking of these children as even human. Ellen Burstyn (holy crap, this woman is amazing here) gives the Grandmother more emotion. For example, when the children work on a beautiful Christmas gift for her and she snubs it, in the book Grandmother is stone-faced and walks out. In the movie, Burstyn shows a flash of emotion, as if she wants to take the gift, is touched by it, but refuses to allow herself to take the children's peace offering. In addition, when the infamous powdered doughnuts appear with the children's daily rations, she says "I wouldn't eat them if I were you." A warning. The kids never got such a warning in the book.

The movie does it's job. It's so sad to watch these children struggle to survive and make the best of their situation while their mother just gallivants off and forgets them. But to me, the book had the chance to really take its time so you feel the days drag on and hope fade in that tiny little room. It's hard to cram that into two hours (I wouldn't have minded if it took longer) but the movie did the book as much justice as time allowed. The kids did a great job in their roles and whenever Burstyn was on the screen, I flinched in fear.

I sincerely hope Lifetime plans to do the other novels because as I read the second and gear up for the third, I would be interested in seeing how the actors handle the change in the characters as they try so desperately to rise above their traumatic past. But the movies should also take their time. Surely Lifetime can clear maybe two and a half hours, right?

In this instance, I have to come down on the side of the book being better, even though the movie was good enough for me to have no problem watching twice in a row. Burstyn as the grandmother is worth the whole darn thing, so Lenni recommends watching AND reading.

Let's Play Episode 1 - Batman & Robin (Playstation)

On Episode 1 of "Let's Play." Justin journeys into Gotham City with Batman & Robin for the Playstation. This was an open world Batman game based off the movie, believe it or not the game is better than the movie. More parts to come.

Part 1 - The Museum

Part 2 - Gold & Wonder

Part 3 - Crown Jewels

Part 4 - Wayne Manor

Part 5 - Botanical Gardens
Part 6 - Gotham Police HQ

Lenni Reviews: In These Words Chapter 6

***This book has adult content! You have been warned!***

After many hours of swagbucks, I finally got enough gift cards to get the next chapter of In These Words by Guiltpleasure from Kobo. I'm a little annoyed I can't get it in print but I'm not willing to wait for more chapters to come out to make another print volume and the digital copies look effing fantastic in my iPad so it's all worth it.

Mild spoilers ahead here. Nothing too big because you need to go read this.

After the EPIC cliffhanger from volume one, Keiji is loose in the house with Katsuya and the only cop guarding them incapacitated - possibly dead - giving Keiji all the time in the word to do whatever he wants with the doctor he claims to love. And thanks to the cop's handy dandy taser, Katsuya is at the mercy of whatever this psycho murderer has in mind.

Once again, I cannot stress the amount of smut in this book. It is beautifully unflinching. The chapter is short, so there isn't much time for Keiji and Katsuya to have that intriguing interplay they had in volume one, but it takes no time at all for Keiji to meet Lecter levels of creepy. I am dying to find out what happens next but I also kinda don't because it just won't seem to end well for Katsuya.

Despite not having paper to hold in my hands, I am so glad I can nab these chapters as they come out. They're a little pricey ($6.99-$7.99) but hey, they got me to buy the first 6 chapters. I think you should, too.

Marvel To Relaunch The Ultimate Universe With Three New Series From Bendis, Marquez, Fialkov, Fiffe And More

It's been fourteen years since Marvel launched it's Ultimate line of comics, with the goal of establishing a universe in which its characters wer younger and modern, and where many of the continuity restrictions of the established Marvel line didn't apply. Over that time, many changes have been made and several significant characters have died. Most notably Peter Parker, who was replaced in the role of Spider Man by young hero Miles Morales.

Now, the Ultimate line will once again embrace change. Following the conclusion of the current line wide Cataclysm event- featuring the heroes of that universe facing off against Galactus. Marvel has announced Ultimate Marvel Now , an initiative that will see a new direction and new titles from creators Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Michel Fiffe and more.

It all begins in April, following the final issue of Cataclyms, which leads into the line's new look. They're able to win the day, but at great sacrifice, a sacrifice that is so huge that it changes the langscape, " Cataclysm  writer Bendis told the AP. It creates a place that demands a fresh start from everyone who surveys it. " Bendis and Marquez, the team behind the current Ultimate Comic Spider Man, will continue their work with Miles Morales in the new Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, with the writer noting that the character's " entire  life as a human being has changed. "

In addition to his solo title, Morales will lead a team of young heroes in the series All-New Ultimates, written by Fiffe, whose work of the self published Copra we've covered extensively, and illustrated by Amilcar Pinna. The team will also include Kitty Pryde, Bombshell, Cloak and Dagger, and the new black Widow. " In the All New Ultimates, we'll see this eclectic group of super-powered teens step up, live fast and maybe die hard," says series editor Mark Paniccia.

And the third title will be Ultimate FF. Writen by Joshua Hale Fialkov and illustrated by Mario Guevara, Ultimate FF will focus on the core members of the future foundation, " a team of geniuses, four of the smartest people in the  Ultimate universe, " according to Fialkov. The team includes Sue Storm and Tony Starks, among others, and one missing member who Fialkov described as " a psychopath."

" Once again, we're destroying something and building something new, but there's an end game in sight," says Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. We created the line to take a chance."

" The long and short of it isthis: The Ultimate (universe) benefits from a good, old kick in the butt."

Following the conclusion of the current line-wide Cataclysm event — featuring the heroes of that universe facing off against Galactus — Marvel has announced Ultimate Marvel NOW, an initiative that will see a new direction and new titles from creators Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Michel Fiffe and more.
It all begins in April, following the final issue of Cataclysm, which leads into the line’s new look. “They’re able to win the day, but at great sacrifice, a sacrifice that is so huge that it changes the entire landscape,” Cataclysm writer Bendis told the AP. “It creates a place that demands a fresh start from everyone who surveys it.” Bendis and Marquez, the team behind the current Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, will continue their work with Miles Morales in the new Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, with the writer noting that the character’s “entire life as a human being has changed.”
In addition to his solo title, Morales will lead a team of young heroes in the series All-New Ultimates, written by Fiffe, whose work on the self-published Copra we’ve covered extensively, and illustrated by Amilcar Pinna. The team will also include Kitty Pryde, Bombshell, Cloak and Dagger, and a new Black Widow. “In All-New Ultimates, we’ll see this eclectic group of super-powered teens step up, live fast and maybe even die hard,” says series editor Mark Paniccia.
And the third title will be Ultimate FF. Written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and illustrated by Mario Guevara, Ultimate FF will focus on the core members of the Future Foundation, “a team of geniuses, four of the smartest people in the Ultimate universe,” according to Fialkov. The team includes Sue Storm and Tony Stark, among others, and one missing member who Fialkov described as “a psychopath.”
“Once again, we’re destroying something and building something new, but there’s an end game in sight,” says Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. “We created the line to take chances.”
“The long and short of it is this: The Ultimate (universe) benefits from a good, old kick in the butt.”

It’s been fourteen years since Marvel launched its Ultimate line of comics, with the goal of establishing a universe in which its characters were younger and modern, and where many of the continuity restrictions of the established Marvel line didn’t apply. Over that time, many changes have been made and several significant characters have died — most notably Peter Parker, who was replaced in the role of Spider-Man by young hero Miles Morales.

Moment Mobile Lens

Two effective ways for phone photographers to enhance their images

As the phone continues to become the most widely used camera in the Western world, we've seen everything from moldable tripods and clever lens adaptors to the comical monopod selfie-assister. Though the most notable accessory for phone photography right now comes from Moment, a new clip-on lens company launching today on Kickstarter. Moment plans to offer a wide-angle lens for capturing surroundings without cropping, and a 70mm equivalent telephoto lens ideal for close up portraits and far off subjects—eliminating the risk of relying on dreadful digital zoom. The glass in both lenses is purpose-built, promising the best possible optic quality. The case-compatible lenses mount with a two piece metal ring and bayonet system which is hardly noticeable on your phone when the lenses aren't in use. And, on top of function, each lens barrel is machined in aluminum for a sleek finish that melds especially well with the iPhone.

With two models in their quiver already, the young brand seems poised to make an impact on the way we use our phone cameras. Visit the Moment campaign on Kickstarter to support the project and ensure you're one of the first to receive the handy new lenses.

Hideo Kojima Shows Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Actually Running on PS4

Legendary Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima has been testing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes lately, and today he showcased something PS4 fans will possibly appreciate.
Apparently the code is already running on Sony’s new console and Kojima-san tweeted a picture of the dashboard ready to launch the game, followed  by what seems to be either a loading screen or the initial splash screen (you can see that one below).

The first picture was accompanied by the line “Today too “I start,” in Japanese, while the s second came with a simple “Begin.”
Unfortunately Kazuhira “Kaz” Miller will probably disappear from the same screens in the western versions of the game just as he did from the box art.

Update: The English versions of the same tweets included Kojima’s own translation: “Here we “begin” again today.” And “And starting.” That probably identifies the second image as the initial splash screen, that could possibly be a work in progress.
