Indie Spotlight: Swimsanity

At Boston F.I.G we had the pleasure of playing Swimsanity. Swimsanity is a level based multilayer brawler. While the controls are an Arcade/Twin Stick Shooter the best way to describe it is fun! From the time I had with Swimsanity at F.I.G it left me wanting to play more. Designed by the guys over at Decoy games. With release set for early to mid 2014 Swimsanity is a game to look out for check out the trailer below.

Lenni Reports: Maker Faire

One of the perks of being a librarian is attending cool things like Maker Faire. It is geek paradise! They have 3D printing, robots, software demos, up-cycling booths, you name it. Heck, they even had a Beer Garden!

Alas, this was not a garden powered by beer; which is what I expected. They just sold beer. I think it's the first time I've ever been disappointed by someone selling beer...

The biggest thing going as far as tech at the faire was 3D printing. The very idea of this blows my mind and they had some pretty impressive displays showcasing what this technology can do. 3D printing has been all over the news and is expanding to all types of materials other than paper; such as high polymer plastics. I'm sure there will be a point where any material is fair game.

Then again, I could be distracted by one of the many building stations they had...
(yes, that's me)

There was a pink elephant!
(shall I name him George?)

Unfortunately I could only go for one day (and yes, I took those pictures with my cheap digital camera...) but this place is a techies dream, a showcase for where science will go in the future. It is the perfect place to bring your kids to get them into scientific discovery and math (two subjects kids usually find boring and it's a shame). Next year I'd like to go all the days and bring some kids with me if only for the joy on their faces when they see this:

That is a remote controlled dog with up-cycled metrocard skin. This is the future, kids. Believe in it.

Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play

On September 21st 2013 at Brooklyn's Prospect Park, New York. Nickelodeon held it's annual celebration Day of Play was held. This event was packed with celebs, performances and a bunch of Nick stars. For those unfamiliar with the event Day of Play happens once every year to encourage activity for kids. It's was a great day filled with games, dance and a concert with music stars "Big Time Rush" and "Ariana Grande." Here are some pictures of the stars coming in to the event from the orange carpet.

Brooke Lopez (Brooklyn Nets Center)

Greg Anthony (Former New York Knick)

Bart Scott (Retired Baltimore Ravens Linebacker)

Ryan Newman (Stars as Emily in the Nick at Nite series "See Dad Run)

Sasha Cohen (US Olympian figure skater)

Ariana Grande

In addition to the stars there was a great concert by Big Time Rush and Ariana Grande. Big Time Rush hit the stage first and sang a selection of songs from Like Nobody's Around, Amazing, Windows Down and City Is Ours Big Time Rush and many more. Ariana performed her hit songs like Better Left Unsaid, Daydreaming, Right There and Lovin it and many more. The performances was great and the crowd was really into it. I really love Ariana performance on Better Left Unsaid.

However the real stars of the event was the kids playing all sorts of activities from Zumba, Football, Basketball, Hip Hop Dance Class and many more. The activities did a great job to promote healthy living and the importance of kids being kids. Kids were networking with each other, making new friends and having a blast with they favorite Nicktoon characters like SpongeBob and Ninja Turtles. It was a great day and I will be going back.

Beyond: Two Souls OST Review

On October 8th 2013 the latest game from Quantic Dream the studio behind games such as "Heavy Rain" and "Fahrenheit" will release "Beyond: Two Souls" starring Ellen Page and William Dafoe. We had a chance to listen to the upcoming OST for the game. The OST is composed by Norman Cordbeil who unfortunately died early in January. The unfinished work was finished by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe. Does this soundtrack go beyond or is this nothing special?

If I would describe the soundtrack's tone it will be a mix of intensity and emotional drama. Based on the music alone you can tell that the game is going to have some intense and emotional moments. If Cordbeli laid the bases then Zimmer and Balfe finished the soundtrack with a grand slam. "Beyond: Two Souls" soundtrack is a beautiful, haunting and cinematic to say the least. Listening to certain tracks can puts you right into the personality of certain characters. For example the track Jodie's theme has a choir with the use of strings, the choir sings softly throughout the track. It makes you think that the character Jodie has a touch of innocence to her. The soundtrack can be heard similar to a movie score, it starts off slow and mellow but with each track the intensity picks up. Some standout tracks are "Beyond", "The Experiment", "The Infraworld" and "Jodie's Story." These tracks define the soundtrack and set the tone for the album and game. Overall I would give the soundtrack a listen it's even better if your readying a mystery or thriller book. The soundtrack is intense, emotional and has a cinematic feel you wouldn't expect from a videogame.

Final Rating: 8.5/B+

Places For Otakus To Shop In New York City

One of the many questions I get asked among friends, readers and blog peers visiting New York is where should they go to find otaku culture in the city. As an otaku living in the city I thought it will best to share the places I go to get my otaku goodness we have in the city that show love to us.

Places To Shop
As big and great New York City is you will be surprise that there aren't many places where you can go to get your anime, cosplay gear and Gundam kits. Usually the best place will be online but there are a few stores in Manhattan and the other boroughs that got you covered.

Image Anime

Image Anime is located 242 W 30th St in Manhattan. The store has everything you expect a store dedicated to anime to have. It has anime DVD's/ Blu-Rays, T-Shirts, some cosplay gear and accessories. However what I buy most from Image Anime is the figurines. This store has a lot to offer in that department from Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Vocaloids and many more. The prices are fair for the figurines and some might come at a high price since they are imported. The service is great and the people are friendly and you will find other otakus to meet and link up with.

Kinokuniya Bookstore

Kinokuniya Bookstore is located on 1073 Ave of the Americas on 42nd street right across from Bryant Park. Kinokuniya is great because it just doesn't have anime and manga. You get the latest magazines, books and CD's that are in Japan. If you're looking for a Vocaloid, FLOW, Utada and many more CD's this will be the place to get it. However since a lot of this stuff is imported the prices can be a little high, but the quality is worth it. If you want the latest in J-Pop, K-Pop and more this will be the place to go.

Anime Castle

As a guy who grew up and still lives in Queens I have to say I'm ashamed that I didn't know about Anime Castle. Anime Castle is located 35-32 Union St in Flushing. It's has the manga and it has the anime and very knowledge people working there. Another great store to meet and link up with some otakus.

Book-Off

I stumbled across Book-Off when I was on a date. To make a long story short she was looking for a particular book and Barnes & Noble didn't have it. We walked around a bit and came across Book-Off. Book-Off is located on 49 W 45th St (between 5th Ave & 6th Ave). If you're looking for a great manga collection this store might be what you're looking for.

Other places to check out will be Midtown Comics, Toy-Tokyo, Chinatown & Forbidden Planet. All these stores you can find your anime, manga and accessories in NYC.

Can Any of the New Superheroes Series Survive More Than One or Two Seasons?

Hey Otakus and Geeks fans, Sean ( The True Comic Fan ) here. Today I had a chance to check out  more previews of the 2 upcoming superhero shows. They seem like pretty good shows, but can they survive more than one season? There has been very little success in the past. Shows like Smallville, Heroes, Arrow, and Mutant X lasted longer than one season, but there have been a few that had potential and didn't make it. Here is a list of shows that are still on going and some that were cancelled.

Mutant X 2001-04

Mutant X is a science fiction television series that debuted on October 6, 2001. The show was created by Avi Arad, and it centers around Mutant X, a team of "New Mutants" who possess extraordinary powers as a result of genetic engineering. The members of Mutant X were used as test subjects in a series of covert government experiments. The mission of Mutant X is to seek out and protect their fellow New Mutants

STORY:  Several years ago a company called Genomex carried out a series of illegal and immoral experiments on human subjects, forever altering the DNA of any children they might have, to make them mutations from the norm. Now many of those children have grown up, and it has become increasingly difficult for the rest of the world to ignore the New Mutants in their midst. Genomex, under the direction of Mason Eckhart, one of the original scientists, seeks to exploit its creations. Others seek to protect them. A New Mutant Underground has sprung up, and one of the most prominent cells in that organization is Mutant X, a team of powerful New Mutants led by Adam Kane, head chief biogeneticist of The Genomex scientists who participated in the experiments which have altered the world forever.

Why it was Cancelled: Even though the series had high ratings and was meant to be renewed for a fourth season, it was abruptly canceled in 2004 after the dismantling of Fireworks Entertainment, one of the show's production companies, ending the show on a cliffhanger.

Heroes  2006-10

Heroes is an American science fiction television drama series created by Tim Kring that appeared on NBC for four seasons from September 25, 2006 through February 8, 2010. The series tells the stories of ordinary people who discover superhuman abilities, and how these abilities take effect in the characters' lives. The series emulates the aesthetic style and storytelling of American comic books, using multi-episode story arcs that build upon a larger, more encompassing arc.

STORY:  The first season, known as "Volume One: Genesis", begins with a seemingly ordinary group of people who gradually become aware that they have special abilities. The story develops showing their reactions to these powers, and how this discovery affects their personal and professional lives. At the same time, several ordinary individuals are investigating the origins and extent of these abilities. Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), a research geneticist, continues his late father's research into the biological source of the powers, while Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) represents, and is a lead agent for, a secret organization known only as "the Company" that wants to control and, if necessary, terminate those who are gifted. After only having a short time to come to terms with their new abilities, each of the heroes is drawn into the final showdown. They must each do their part to stop the destruction of the world that starts with an impending explosion at Kirby Plaza in New York City.

Why it was Cancelled: Low ratings, writers strike during season 2, Season three  started with strong ratings that dropped steadily throughout the season. The season's finale placed last in its time slot. You can take your pick of reasons why it was cancelled, but in February 2010 one of the best series ( I think ) was over, ending how each season did in the past with a scene that would start the next season. (Cliff Hanger). While creator Kring was hopeful over the show's future, the network considered making a television special event to conclude the series. However, on September 9, 2010, NBC announced the decision to stop any further development of the Heroes franchise.

No Ordinary Family 2010-11

No Ordinary Family is an American television series that aired on ABC and CTV in Canada. The one-hour science fiction comedy-drama was produced by ABC Studios for the 2010–11 television season. The series ran from September 28, 2010, to April 5, 2011, on Tuesdays at 8:00 pm ET/PT. The show centers on the Powells, a typical American family living in fictional Pacific Bay, California, whose members gain special powers after their plane crashes in the Amazon, Brazil.

STORY:  The series focused on the Powells, their powers and attempting to discover the nefarious plot of Dr. Dayton King, Stephanie's boss. In the pilot episode, Jim Powell forces his disjointed family into a vacation to Brazil, which ends when their plane crashes in the Amazon Rainforest and the family returns home. In time, each family member is revealed to have a superpower: Jim has superhuman strength, which includes leaping tall buildings in a single bound and near-invincibility; Stephanie has superhuman speed; Daphne has telepathy, specifically mind reading; and JJ has super-intelligence, although he keeps his power a secret from his parents for a while.

Why it was Cancelled: The Show had alot of  potential that should have earned it a second season. The premiere was watched by 10.69 million viewers, the second episode dropped to 8.99 million viewers. So due to low viewer ratings on May 13, 2011, ABC announced that No Ordinary Family had been cancelled.

ALPHAS 2011-13

Alphas is an American science fiction dramatic television series created by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow. It follows a group of people with superhuman abilities, known as "Alphas", as they work to prevent crimes committed by other Alphas.

STORY:  The series follows five people, known as "Alphas", led by noted neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn), as they investigate criminal cases involving other suspected Alphas. Rosen and his team operate under the auspices of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the criminal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Defense. While investigating these crimes, it does not take the team too long to discover that a group known as "Red Flag", which was thought defeated and eliminated long ago, is using other Alphas to commit crimes.

Why it was Cancelled:  Despite critics praising the series and becoming a fan favorite after season one. Alphas didn't capture the same viewing audience in season 2 and on January 16, 2013, Syfy announced that the program would not be returning for a third season, ending the series with an unresolved cliffhanger.

Honorable Mentions:

These shows only got one season

Birds of Prey  2002

The Cape  2010

These shows never made it past the pilot Episode

Mercy Reef ( Aquaman )   2006

Notice Aquaman is the guy who eventually plays  Green Arrow in Smallville.

Generation X  1996

Wonder Women 2011
( Adrianne Palicki )

If you go to Bing.com and search Wonder Women Pilot, you will find the failed first episode. It's one that's 42:00 long or just a bit shorter. Check it out and tell me what you think.

Despite the failures, there has been some success with shows like Smallville and Arrow that could give  the two new series a chance to make it. The question I have is what doomed the other shows to low ratings and viewership?  How can they avoid many of the pitfalls that have bedeviled other superhero-flavored projects.

SMALLVILLE   2001-11

Smallville is an American television series developed by writers/producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. It is based on the DC Comics character Superman, originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The television series was initially broadcast by The WB Television Network (The WB), premiering on October 16, 2001. After Smallville's fifth season, The WB and UPN merged to form The CW, which became the broadcaster for the show in the United States. It ended its tenth and final season on May 13, 2011. The series follows the adventures of Clark Kent (Tom Welling), who resides in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, during the years before he becomes Superman. The first four seasons focus on Clark and his friends' high school years. After season five, the show ventured into more adult settings, eventually focusing on his career at the Daily Planet, as well as introducing other DC comic book superheroes and villains.

WHY IT SUCCEEDED  The writers and producers of Smallville were highly creative, and  produced some excellent episodes, while introducing very appealing and likeable characters. Tom Welling, is the perfect Clark Kent. He is very handsome, well built, and looks more like the Superman character than anyone. Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor borders on genius. He provides us with the perfect mix of intelligence, class, cunning, and restrained evil, that we so admire in  wealthy Billionaire villains. With the introduction of various DC Universe characters at the right episodes and seasons, Smallville kept viewers interested every season till the end.

ARROW 2012-Present

Arrow is an action adventure television series developed by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. It is based on the fictional superhero Green Arrow, a costumed crime-fighter who appears in comic books published by DC Comics. It premiered in North America on The CW on October 10, 2012. The series follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, portrayed by Stephen Amell, who, after five years of being stranded on a hostile island, returns home to fight crime and corruption as a secret vigilante whose weapon of choice is a bow and arrows. Arrow will also feature appearances by other DC Comics characters.

WHY IT SUCCEEDED With a strong premiere episode that gave some brief insight into the back story of Starling City’s new protector, who is based on DC Comic’s bow-wielding superhero Green Arrow. While the pilot didn’t exactly illustrate how a rich playboy trains himself to become a nearly-unstoppable crime fighting machine, it left this missing part open for future episodes to explain. The series is also slowly introducing us to DC universe characters like: The Flash ( Barry Allen ) and Roy Harper ( Speedy or Arsenal ) who will eventually become his sidekick. It's rumored that the introduction of The Flash in season three will spawn a spin off for it's own series, further showing DC's success on the small screen for it's comic book heroes.

So can Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and The Tomorrow People make it? In my opinion, I think one out of the two can. Agents of Shield seems to be the front runner to succeed. With Iron Man 3 and The Avengers being huge box office hits, the series can build off of their success with creative stories that link the show to the marvel universe. Tomorrow People will have to have a great first episode and stories to carry the series, but shows like Arrow in the line up it might help it  make it to season two.

Marvel's Agents of Shield series premieres Tuesday Sept 24th 8/7c

Tomorrow People series premiere Wednesday Oct 9th 9/8c

Then in “Game On,” the search is on when Sanjay and Craig’s favorite video game goes AWOL. Together, they embark on awesome kid-inspired quests that are at times totally ridiculous, absolutely gross and weirdly sweet. The series is created by Jim Dirschberger, Jay Howell and Andreas Trolf. Dirschberger, Howell and Thurop Van Orman are co-executive producers, and award-winning animation team Chris Viscardi and Will McRobb are executive producers.

Switchblade Pictures Announces Iron Girl

As superhero films based on American comics sweep over the world, Switchblade Pictures returns the favor with Japan’s typically unique perspective on the concept: IRON GIRL! Based on the longstanding Japanese science fiction and anime philosophy that a few extra artificial enhancements can only make a super heroine even more attractive, IRON GIRL launches AV model, actress and ultimate hardbody Kiara Asuka (ULTRAMAN GINGA) into Power Ranger style combat against hordes of ruthless bandits terrorizing a mysterious post-apocalyptic world. Adding extra feminine firepower to the mix is KAMEN RIDER franchise star (and METAL GEAR SOLID 3 poster girl) Rina Akiyama, who joins in the girls gone wild in the wastelands action, while complimentary eye candy for the ladies is provided by Yasuhisa Furuhara (PIRATE SQUADRON GOKAIGER, ENGINE SQUADRON GO-ONGER.) Featuring fight choreography provided by stunt world legend Takanori Shibahara (DYNAMAN, the SPACE SHARIFF series, JUSPION, FLOWER & SNAKE,) the 92 minute film was directed by Masatoshi Yagamine from a screenplay by Yagamine and Yoshiyuki Ishizuka.

In a distant land and an unknown time, a small village is under siege, terrorized by the brutal reign of the bandits known as the Crazy Dogs. However, the legends of the village speak of an Iron Clad Savior, one who shall come to the aid of the people and liberate them from the forces of evil and oppression. So when brave young Anne is miraculously rescued from a vicious bandit attack by a superhumanly strong heroine in shining armor, she becomes convinced that this mysterious fighter must be the figure from the prophecy. However, the woman known only as Iron Girl has been cursed with amnesia, and not even she knows whether she can actually defeat the Crazy Dogs. Not that the Dogs are about to let any potential threat to their power stay alive. Prepare for a battle royale as a full frontal assault of female fury tears into the dogs of war in IRON GIRL!

IRON GIRL will be released on DVD in Japanese with English subtitles beginning in January 2014.

Otakus & Geeks: Netflix Picks of The Week #2

Another Sunday which means it's time for Netflix Picks of The Week. Sorry I miss last Sunday I was traveling and had some parties to attend. Here are my five choices for the week.

Pick Number 1
Genre - Educational Documentary
Title - Walking With Dinosaurs

Synopsis - The Cretaceous, Triassic and Jurassic periods come to life in this Emmy-winning series that shows the Earth through the eyes of individual dinosaurs.

Why You Should Watch - It's dinosaurs of course. This is a good six part episode that showcases different times of the dinosaur era. It shows dinosaurs that you probably never heard of and does a great job of showing dinosaurs of the sea. It's very interesting and educational.

Pick Number 2
Genre - TV Show
Title - Who The (Bleep) Did I Marry?

Synopsis - Meet men and women who thought they were happily married until one day they uncovered secrets about their spouse...secrets that would unravel their peaceful lives and leave them asking: Who the Bleep Did I Marry?

Trailer

Why You Should Watch - This is real stories of real people who married the wrong person. Not to the mention it features the woman who married one of the most notorious serial killers in DC. It's a great show and really makes think of doing intense background checks on the person you are with. Better safe than sorry.

Pick 3
Genre - Sports
Title - WWE: The Epic Journey of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Synopsis - Follow the career of one of sports entertainment's biggest superstars, and find out what exactly "the Rock is cooking."

Trailer

Why You Should You Watch - There is only three reasons you should watch this on Netflix. Reason 1 it's the great one. 2. Don't be a jabroni. 3. It's one hell of a documentary showing the great one's origins and how he became the mega star he is today.

Pick Number 4
Genre - Foreign Action/Comedy
Title - The Thieves

Synopsis - Cranking up the action to full throttle, this slick caper flick finds two teams of Korean and Chinese professional thieves working together to pinch a $20 million diamond from an impenetrable casino vault in Macao.

Trailer

Why You Should Watch - This is a very entertaining caper movie. It has great characters, great action sequences and the chase on the building is epic and well filmed. If you don't mind subtitles for 2 hours and 16 minutes give this one a look.

Pick 5
Genre - Kids/Cartoon
Title - Ultimate Spider-Man

Synopsis -  Peter Parker comes of age in an epic tale - which finds him torn between his teenage life and a war between SHIELD and Norman Osborn. 16 year old Peter Parker is given the chance to become the Ultimate Spider-Man!

Trailer

Why You Should Watch - It's a decent Spider-Man series. It's not as good or emotional as Spider-Man TAS but for this generation it's a fun kids show. It has some good animation and some fun humor for all ages.

Lenni Reviews: Blue is the Warmest Color by Julie Maroh

Who can resist that smirk on the cover? I sure can't. And as is par for the course for me, I flipped through the pages of  Blue is the Warmest Color by Julie Maroh (originally called Blue Angel when it was published in France) before I read it and my art geek tendencies were immediately satisfied by the breathy style of the art in this book. Every page is like a sigh; poignant and emotional.

The story begins with a young woman named Emma vising the home of her deceased lover, Clementine. Before she died, Clementine wrote a letter to her mother asking for her diary to be delivered to Emma after she passed. The story of how Clementine realizes she is a lesbian and her relationship with Emma is told via the entries Clementine wrote.

I am a fan of well done LGBT comics and I am a sucker for a good (honest) love story no matter the sexual orientation of the characters. As long as the characters are genuine and the relationship realistic, they could be tri-sexual for all I care (apparently that's a thing). As long as the story is good, I'll be a happy otaku.

As the story is told in flashbacks, the colors are muted, save for blue; the color Emma's hair was dyed when Clementine met her. Even the scenes set in the present have a dream like quality. This story does contain some scenes of smexy woman love so be aware if that offends your sensibilities.

I know there are readers out there who get tired of the traditional coming out story but this comic is worth picking up. It isn't just the story of how Clementine became a lesbian, its the story of two women in love who were taken from one another too soon. This graphic novel has been made into a movie and when it comes out, I plan to watch it to see if its as good as the book. If your heart can stand the ending, I highly recommend this stunning graphic novel.

Karneval Review

If you like the circus when you were younger, "Karneval" is anything but prancing clowns, trained animals, and beautiful acrobatics. "Karneval" is about how two people Nai and Gareki, who met at a very weird situation. Nai was looking for a long lost friend until he was captured and about to be killed by a woman. Geraki comes in and has the intentions to rob the woman. Come to find out the woman is not really a woman and the two boys run into an organization called "Circus", which is like the Men in Black but they actually disguise themselves by being in a circus. So now these two boys are now stuck in this organization and travel with this mysterious "Circus" to many new adventures.

Characters: I love these characters. Geraki is my favorite because of his bad boy attitude but Nai has a cute factor which will be explained later in the series. Yogi is adorable but has a 360 later in the series that I did not expect. The characters are awesome and mysterious as "Circus" itself.

Music: I love the opening song for it has a rock feel, but the ending song really takes the show and put it into a campy, circus, type feel which makes sense because they hide their identities by being in a circus. I listened to some of the OST and I love it. It's jazzy and it fits this anime well.

Overall: A-
I have only seen up to episode 8 so this is what I think based on what I've seen. Its a great show with great music and dynamic characters. If you enjoy mystery, fun, beautiful artwork, and all around action, then come on down to the one and only "Karneval"!

Rumiko Takahashi is one of Japan’s most prolific and respected manga artists and is the creator of several long running series including MAISON IKKOKU, RANMA 1/2, and INUYASHA – all published in North America by VIZ Media. The spotlight on her prolific career began in 1978 when she won an honorable mention in Shogakukan's annual New Comic Artist Contest for Those Selfish Aliens. Later that same year, her boy-meets-alien comedy series, Urusei Yatsura, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This phenomenally successful manga series was adapted into anime format and also spawned a TV series and half a dozen theatrical-release movies, all incredibly popular. Takahashi followed up the success of her debut series with one blockbuster hit after another— MAISON IKKOKU ran from 1980 to 1987, RANMA ½ from 1987 to 1996, and INUYASHA from 1996 to 2008. Other notable works include MERMAID SAGA, RUMIC THEATER, ONE-POUND GOSPEL, and RIN-NE (all also published in North America by VIZ Media).
