A Retro Game Look Back At Cowboy Bebop (Playstation)

Cowboy Bebop is a scrolling shooter which bears striking similarities to Star Fox for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom). The player controls Spike Spiegel's Swordfish II from a third person perspective. Each level involves chasing another ship (the bounty head) along a set track through different environments, while enemies (spaceships, robots, etc.) attack. Each stage ends with a boss battle, confronting your target.

Iron Man 3 Official Trailer

It's finally here the long waited trailer for Iron Man 3. I must say it looks way darker than the previous installments and I like that. Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Interview With Michael J. Bassett

We sat down with Michael J. Bassett the writer and director of Silent Hill Revelation 3D.  We talk about how he approach the sequel and more.

OtakusandGeeks.com: What were some challenges to approaching this sequel? The last movie was 5 to 6 years ago.

Michael J. Bassett: You really have to go to Silent Hill 3 and say okay Sheryl in the game is Sharon in the movie so it's not totally confusing. What did she become? For me she became Heather. Why is she Heather? What is the continuation of her story and how can we conclude that? The writing was the hardest part. I have to make a sequel to the first movie so it g can make sense. Then tie in the ending from the first movie with the Christopher Da Saliva character, and explain how he gets back to Silent Hill. Then I take the story from Silent Hill 3 and adapt that so it makes sense for the sequel and still cater to an audience who never played the game. I hope that I made all those things work.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Did you ever play the games?

Michael J. Bassett: I like the games. I'm a huge fan of the games. It's one of the first games I played that made me said wow this is cinematic. It really made me get engaged in a emotional way. I'm following a character's story, playing the narrative and love having the shit scared out of me at the same time. Konami did an amazing job with the series.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Are there any characters, locations and scenes veterans of Silent Hill will recognized?

Michael J. Bassett: A pure hardcore gamer will beat me up for putting Pyramid Head in this one, because he comes from game 2 and not game 3. However he is in the first movie and it will be hard to pretend that he doesn't exist anymore. I use Pyramid in a way that I feel is appropriate for Heather's psychological situation. In the game world the mythology of Silent Hill is Pyramid is a corruption of the executioner. If you watch the movie that is used and he has a purpose. In terms of scenes and locations there are a handful things I took from the game that will have gamers say hey I played that.

OtakusandGeeks.com: How did you select the monsters you would use in the movie?

Michael J. Bassett: You try to select the monsters that will be appropriate for the story. At one point Heather goes to asylum because she is going to see Leonard. In the game you only see Leonard as the monster, but I wanted to see the human personification of Leonard. So I called Michael Mcdowell and if anyone who was going to get Leonard it would be him. Heather is in asylum and there was surgery being done on brains, so we created a brain monster. The brain monster is a creature that is absolutely brilliant. The guy whole brain is exposed, no face, broken mouth with teeth all over the place. It's a great scene.

OtakusandGeeks.com: You choose to limit the use of CGI why?

Michael J. Basset: I always go practical compare to CGI and that's kind of an ego thing, because I want to control it. The moment I have an actor even if it's a guy in a monster suit, I can stand there and show them what to do. In the digital world I would have to say this is a tennis ball and it will be scary eventually please act accordingly. I prefer to have things actually like there. See that guy standing at 10 feet he has a big sword in his hand and if you don't get away fast something bad is going to happen *laughs*. It gives a better performance for the actors. I' am a old school kind of guy.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Will you revisit Silent Hill again?

Michael J. Basset: I think we closed the Heather story. I would like to start telling my own stories of Silent Hill. The graphic novels have already started that, there is one that is set in the old west of Silent Hill. I would love to make a really low budget one, which has that kind of full sexual perversity that Silent Hill brings that you can't do in mainstream movies. Will I go back to Silent Hill you bet ya.

Interview With Adelaide Clemens

We had a chat with Adelaide Clemens the star of Silent Hill Revelation 3D. We talk Silent Hill, what was it like taking on the role of Heather Mason and more.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Can you tell us a little bit about your character?

Adelaide Clemens: Yes I play Heather Mason. She's a 17 year old girl who lives with her father. They have been on the run for six years and I don't think she really knows why. There is a lot about her past that she is still trying to figure out. She has these experiences happen to her that get increasingly more freighting which eventually leads her to Silent Hill.

Adelaide Clemens as Heather Mason

OtakusandGeeks.com: You play more than one character in this movie. Can you tell us a little about that character?

Adelaide Clemens: I play a very younger Heather Mason with a different look. I had this big brown wig on which was really fun. I also play another character which is evil. It was a challenge to change the voice. I love  doing vocal dynamics it was fun.

OtakusandGeeks.com: How did you prep for these roles?

Adelaide Clemens: I went to the videogames and the first film itself. Losing your mind is one of the scariest things to me. Those characters have that sense of desperation. You examine and ask yourself what would you do if you were going to lose your mind or identity.

OtakusandGeeks.com: What was it like filming the movie?

Adelaide Clemens: It was really interesting. Dynamically it was the most physically challenging film that I've done. I 'm a runner and I use to be a gymnast and thought to myself oh yeah I'll be fine. However every day for four months running, jumping, screaming and doing stunts was really strenuous, but it made me feel like Heather. As for filming in 3D I couldn't shove my hand into the lens *laughs* you wouldn't have a face.

OtakusandGeeks.com: When filming green screen you usually have to use your imagination. Did you have to create a perception of the monsters in your mind? Or did they show you a picture what the monsters would look like?

Adelaide Clemens: The thing is we only had one monster that was CGI so I didn't have much work to do in that sense. Michael was very clear about that, because he said that it will create a different performance from the actors. Red Pyramid was a wonderful stunt man on stills standing ten feet tall and holding a huge axe. It creates a total different film experience actually having the characters there it raises the intensity.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Were you fully aware of the games coming into the movie?

Adelaide Clemens: I have two younger brothers and both love videogames and Silent Hill was one of them they would play it everyday. The first time I played it I think I last like thirty two minutes in the game. It's scary game which was Konami attention.

OtakusandGeeks.com: Was there a monster that scared you?

Adelaide Clemens: It was this faceless monster that had brains coming out of his nose and eyes. I had to a fight scene with this man monster. Michael was like shoot him in the face and I had my eyes close the whole time and I kept missing the face. I was like he doesn't have a face *laughs*. Just another day in Silent Hill.

Silent Hill Revelations comes out October 26th 2012 nationwide.

First Thoughts: Halo 4 Multiplayer at NYCC

Earlier in the week we got our hands on the Halo 4 Multiplayer at New York ComicCon. All 4 days the lines were more than an hour wait until the last second, And it was truly worth the wait! The game feels polished and puts armor abilities to much better use than reach. Great load out selection and it is balanced so it still feels like a halo game while offering a good selection that fits most any play style. The controls are responsive and every thing feels right. For me the best experience was playing on the halo 3 map Valhalla its a great example how the game differs from previous halo games. With new weapons, armor abilities and the new vehicle the mantis you really get to see how every thing ties together. In all it is a more tactical game compared to previous games nothing feels to over powered, and everyone has a chance. Over all a great demo and cant wait to pick it up next month.

Deadpool Gangnam Style

There is once in a while when I'm watching random stuff on Youtube that I come across something epic. Deadpool vs Gangnam Style is one of those cases. I was watching the PSY Gangnam Style song again because I can't get enough, and I came across this video done by a Deadpool Cosplayer. He was at this year's New York Comic Con. Even though we missed him this video alone was worth a shout. This is truly epic and amazing. I love the edition of Bane as well.

NYCC: Japan America Presents DANNY CHOO

In case you're not too familiar with Danny Choo, oh boy let me be the first to introduce you!
Serving as a great inspiration for Otaku everywhere for creating a direct portal to Japanese culture through his passion to live and work in Japan. Invited the Japan Foundation,  Danny Choo gave some helpful tips on how to persue your passion if living and working in Japan is a life goal of yours.
It is for me, since I want to tattoo and give back to the art community there, so knowing that these tips were helpful for me, I'm happy to pass them along knowing that they'll also help some of our fellow Otaku!

Here's a (semi) short video on all that Danny Choo gets into as we experience Culture Japan.

While Otakus & Culture Japan directly relates to Japanese language and culture, the tips Danny Choo gives on language immersion can work for ANY language and goals to work in another country.
  • Reading & writing are important so be sure to do so as much as you can
  • Set goals and discipline for yourself, the JPLT is a good way
  • Seek a part-time relating to Japanese (or the language of your choice)
  • Make friends with similar hobbies/ interests
  • Further business study of Japanese is encouraged (to NOT have a translator)
I say we try and it and give Danny Choo a run for his money. I think he'd be rather pleased that his tips helped!

NYCC: Evil Dead Panel

Evil Dead Remake Panel

Hey Otakus and Geeks fans, Sean (The True Comic Fan) and I got a chance at this years Comic Con to attend the Evil Dead panel. Now I was only six when the original Sam Raimi film was first released, but a friend introduced me to it in my teens and I was hooked ever since.

Panel:
The Evil Dead panel was F*%#king Awesome!!! I mean I wanted to grab my Boom Stick and go fight some demons myself. The remake will be released on April 12, 2013 and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore.

In the Evil Dead remake the story centers on five twenty-something friends holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

In the beginning of the panel we were given a teaser picture (shown below from entertainment weekly) myself and fans thought this would be the only glimpse of the film we would get……..but wait……like opening that present you’ve been waiting for on Christmas, they gave us an exclusive look at the trailer. I can’t begin to describe how great the movie looks. The scenes are defiantly an upgrade from the original. All I’m really going to say is when the trailer drops, this will be the movie you’ll want to see.

Bruce Campbell was funny, charismatic and he kept everyone who attend the panel entertained the entire time. Producer Campbell added, "As middle-aged filmmakers now, we realized maybe it's just too late to strap on that chainsaw one more time." He went on, "The point is, it's time to give these people what they want - a new experience done with handsome young thespians covered in new buckets of blood, from a new director hand-picked by Sam Raimi himself."

Panel
