Prophets of Science Fiction: Philip K Dick

Prophets of Science Fiction: Philip K Dick

Hey Otakus and Geeks fans, Sean (The Comic Guy) and today I want tell you guys about a show airing tonight on Discovery Sci called Prophets of Science Fiction featuring Philip K Dick. Here is a synopsis of what the series is about.

What once was just imagination is now real; what was once the distant future is now around the corner. The "Science Fiction" of the past has now simply become "Science". And the science of the future was strangely prophesied by a group of visionaries whose dreams once may have deemed them renegades and "mad scientists," have become reality!

In 1950, the term "Robotics" was coined by author Isaac Asimov in his book I.ROBOT — and our collective imagination reeled. In the years since, literature, movies and television have allowed us to embrace the notion that the ideas of a few inspired visionaries could be made real. What is more astonishing is that these ideas have been, are currently and will be put to practice in our everyday lives. Each episode of the upcoming series PROPHETS OF SCIENCE FICTION will focus on how the great minds of Science Fiction imagined our future for us, and how some, in turn, made their fantasies real.

In a dynamic hyper-stylized way that has never been seen before. We will take a tour of what was, and what will be through the eyes of the visionary authors, illustrators, filmmakers, and scientists who have become the PROPHETS OF SCIENCE FICTION!

This weeks episode: Philip K Dick Premiere: Wednesday, November 16 at 10PM on the Science Channel.

Literary genius, celebrated visionary, paranoid outcast: writer Philip K. Dick lived a life of ever-shifting realities straight from the pages of his mind-bending sci-fi stories. Dick's iconoclastic work fuels blockbuster films like Minority Report and Blade Runner, and inspires ground breaking research in physics, robotics—even law enforcement.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Dick pioneers the concept of virtual reality in his fiction. From this analog era, Philip K. Dick dreams into being a digital future — now realized in everything from motion-sensing video games, to the revolutionary simulated environments of UC San Diego's fully immersive Star CAVE.

In the 1956 thriller The Minority Report, Dick envisions a reality where pre-crime police can peer into the future to stop crimes before they occur. Fifty years later, American police departments unveil the bleeding edge in real-world precognitive crime prevention technology.

Dick's landmark 1968 novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep — known to a generation of moviegoers as Blade Runner — posits a blurring of the line between man and machine. According to robot-engineers, we are now on the cusp of just such a world.

The brilliant author's work continues to resound with an always-expanding audience. Through a lifetime of surreal experience, Philip K. Dick confronts readers with a deceptively simple question: What is reality?

Review:

This was the first episode I watched and I have to say it has made me a fan. In the 1950’s and 60’s Philip K Dick wrote about things that most considered at the time, to be crazy paranoid delusions of the future. He believed technology would be our greatest achievement and also our downfall. This is a must see episode and I recommend this for any Sci- Fi geek. So check it out and let us know what you think.

Yu Yu Hakusho Vs Dragonball Z

Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragonball Z are two of the best fighting Anime series of all time. After re-watching both series a question enter my head. Which series is better than the other? If I had to make a choice who will reign supreme? The time has come for me to make my choice. I will be making my decision based on Story, Characters, Music, Acting, Battles and the Final Episode.

Story & Characters- When it comes to story, I will have to give it to Yu Yu Hakusho. Don't get me wrong the saga of Dragonball Z is epic. However DBZ tends to drag with fillers, and the storyline really feels the same for the most part. Villain comes to threaten the universe, Goku and the others train and fight to save the planet. The story is simple, and really doesn't offer a theme or some kind of mythos to make you think. That's not a bad thing, however Yu Yu Hakusho story is better written, the saga's have an emotional impact on the characters. There really isn't any fillers to make the series drag. The plot is more interesting, and you can relate to the characters more in Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei are characters many viewers can relate too. Yusuke coming from a broken home, with a drunk mother, people always judging him, telling him how to live his life. Some people can relate to a situation like that. While in DBZ it's hard to relate to Goku. Goku is the embodiment of purity. He really doesn't have no inner struggles like other characters in the series. Too many one dimensional characters and plots in DBZ makes you lose interest by time the Buu saga starts. All the villains in DBZ have one goal in mind and that is control. While in Yu Yu Hakusho the villains have more than power on their mind. Some villains have a point or ideal to prove like Sensui. Others want to just test their full potential like Toguro. Each villain in Yu Yu Hakusho has more of a complex motive, there is layers of why they're doing these things, it can relate to their personality or ideal. You don't really get that in DBZ. Frieza wants to rule, Cell wants to rule, Buu just wants chaos. There is no real reason why these villains want control. In Yu Yu Hakusho you understand why Sensui is the way he is, you get why Toguro is the way he is. What is the reason for Frieza tyrant ways? Where is the real backstory on the villains? It's too one dimensional. Dragonball Z has a nice concept, but it feels too repetitive and the story drags, the characters are one dimensional except for Vegeta, Piccolo and the Androids. Yu Yu Hakusho has a theme, well written characters, characters with layers and villains with a purpose. This leads to a more emotional ending, climatic battles and characters that you will remember. Winner for Story & Characters is Yu Yu Hakusho.

Music - I really enjoy the music of Yu Yu Hakusho, however it can't compete with Dragonball Z soundtrack both English and Japanese. Dragonball Z music is timeless from the beginning of it's opening theme Cha Ha La Head Cha La. The music in Dragonball Z really gets you excited for the show. It keeps you engaged during battles, and whatever is going on in a scene you feel it. Yu Yu Hakusho soundtrack is phenomenal as well, but some of the character themes I felt didn't fit. When it comes to replay value in my MP3 player, Dragonball Z soundtrack is on repeat. Winner for Music is Dragonball Z.

Acting - The acting is hard to judge, mainly because the voice actors in Dragonball Z are also in Yu Yu Hakusho (English Dub). This one is going to be a tie. I love the voice work in Yu Yu Hakusho and love the voice work in Dragonball Z. Justin Cook owns Yusuke, Chris Sabat owns Vegeta, you can't see these characters with different actors. If Sean Schemmel can scream that long for Super Saiyan 3 transformation, you know you have some really talented actors. Both series have some amazing performances from Laura Bailey, Chris Sabat, Justin Cook and more, it's hard to side one over the other. Winner for acting is a tie.

Sean Schemmel as Goku

Battles - The battles in Yu Yu Hakusho have more meaning, more emotion behind it. Dragonball Z battles are also emotional, but it's the same format in the outcome. Usually it's Goku who saves the day, in the series you were hoping other characters will get some shine. Goku always saves the day, while in Yu Yu Hakusho everyone gets some shine. Hiei saves the day, Kuwbara has his moment, Kurama and more. However when it comes to actual battles, Dragonball Z is in a league of it's own. Dragonball Z battles are pure epic, the series really shines in battles. The animation, fighting styles, attacks are all cleverly done and original. Yu Yu Hakusho battles are epic, but can feel generic at times, especially in the early episodes. Best battle in the series is Yuskue vs Sensui (see video below of epic ownage). This battle shows Yu Yu Hakusho at it's finest. However when comes to epic battles, styles, attacks Dragonball Z owns. Winner for Battles goes to Dragonball Z.

Yusuke vs Sensui

Final Episode - A series ending is just as important as it's beginning and middle. Yu Yu Hakusho ending is heartwarming, and after 112 episodes you feel like you're losing a friend. Dragonball Z also gives you this feeling as well. Both series endings gives you closure and satisfactions, however I like Yu Yu Hakusho ending better, due to the heartwarming and that little tear of joy that came with it. Winner For Final Episode is Yu Yu Hakusho.

Winner: Since I don't want this to end in a tie. I will add influence into the mix. Which Anime had the most influence? Which Anime is mostly referred to in pop culture and in other Anime? Which had the most impact? The winner is Dragonball Z. Yu Yu Hakusho is no doubt amazing, but Dragonball Z has made a bigger impact.

Which do you think is better and why? Sound off in the comments section.

Dark Horse Comics to Publish Caitlín R. Kiernan's Alabaster!

DARK HORSE COMICS TO PUBLISH

CAITLÍN R. KIERNAN’S ALABASTER!

November 9, MILWAUKIE, OR—Caitlín R. Kiernan is the author of numerous works of dark fantasy and science fiction, including nine novels, several comic-book series (including Sandman spinoff The Dreaming), and over two hundred published short stories and novellas. Now, she brings her tales to the land of Dark Horse Comics.

Alabaster is based on Caitlín R. Kiernan’s fan-favorite Dancy Flammarion stories, a dark fantasy series centered around a female teenage protagonist of striking appearance and hidden, terrible depths. For nearly as long as she can remember, seventeen-year-old Dancy Flammarion has fought monsters, cutting a bloody swath through the demons and dark things of the world, aimed like a weapon by a merciless seraph, more taskmaster than guardian.

Part continuation, part reimagining, the series begins with Dancy making and breaking an oath in the name of her seraph, who subsequently abandons her. Injured and alone, Dancy has to find her own way for the first time in her life—and the wolves are closing in.

Alabaster will first appear in Dark Horse Presents #9 (on sale February 22, 2012), followed by the five-issue miniseries Alabaster: Wolves, which throws readers into Dancy’s world with a bang, strips away her seraph, and introduces the two characters who will become her long-term supporting cast. Alabaster: Wolves #1 is on sale April 11, 2012.

Alabaster features artwork by Eisner Award–nominated artist Steve Lieber and cover art by Greg Ruth!

GoldRun X Clutter Magazine Designer Toy Run

GOLDRUN X CLUTTER MAGAZINE DESIGNER TOY RUN

AUGMENTED REALITY SCAVENGER HUNT GIVES FANS A CHANCE TO WIN DESIGNER TOYS BY RENOWNED ARTISTS INCLUDING GARY BASEMAN, FRANK KOZIK, ERICK SCARECROW, LOUISE EVANS AND LUKE CHUEH

(New York, NY, November 10, 2011) - GoldRun, a leader in augmented reality marketing programs, announced today it has partnered with Clutter Magazine, the world’s premier media source for Designer Toys, to create the first-ever augmented reality scavenger hunt of a curated collection of coveted Designer Toys, representing the work of more than 30 acclaimed artists. Launching on November 10, fans can participate by downloading the free GoldRun app and following the “GoldRun X Clutter Magazine Designer Toy Run” to participate.

Through GoldRun, users will see virtual representations of real Designer Toys, which they can capture to gain points and compete against each other to win the real toys. This groundbreaking campaign will bring together the sculptural world of designer toys and their tight-knit, international fanbase to a global audience through cutting-edge mobile technology. “AR technology is creating a paradigm shift from a world of search to a world of discovery. Now, an international artist and collector community can engage on a level never before possible, changing the landscape for how art is consumed as collectibles, both in the virtual and real worlds,” says Vivian Rosenthal, CEO and Founder of GoldRun.

The GoldRun X Clutter Magazine Designer Toy Run will consist of three different types of runs all varying in geographic scope to maximize community gameplay: first, a globally available hunt; second, a city-specific hunt available in New York, London, San Francisco, and Chicago; and third, a location-specific hunt that will be deployed within 3 high-traffic locations throughout the 4 available cities. Running over the course of 6 weeks, the toys will be rotated twice a week in the GoldRun app to optimize exposure for all 30 artists in participation and provide a diverse selection of collectibles for those playing.

All players are encouraged to share photos over Facebook and Twitter for a chance to win the toy of their choice. Competing against each other across the leaderboard, the players with the most points win actual designer toys. With a selection of over 250 toys, there is a wealth of prizes to be had for the seasoned Designer Toy collector or the budding fan.

“GoldRun is a great opportunity to increase fans’ knowledge about designer toys using the latest in app technology,” says Josh Kimberg, Clutter’s Managing Partner. “As you can see from our numerous interactive contests, Clutter is all about utilizing high-tech to increase the fun! We're thrilled to bring this activation to the international toy community.”

Recognized alongside a specific movement of illustrative and modern pop art, designer toys are not played with but enjoyed for their aesthetic appeal. With the innovative idea of using industrial manufacturing methods to create miniature works of art, the Designer Toy Movement gained momentum in the early 2000s when designers, comic book artists, illustrators, and graffiti artists, inspired by popular culture, had a new outlet for their creative energies and soon collectors were lining up to buy their releases.

The latest product designs represent a convergence of numerous subcultures, including underground comics, rock poster, street art, subversive culture and skateboard graphics. Clutter, which has been at the forefront of the movement since 2004, has harnessed this new energy with the launch of the inaugural Designer Toy Awards in 2011.

“It's cool to see the physical sculptural world merge with the augmented reality world for this cool toy hunt. Fans and followers will get a chance to get their hands on some amazing limited edition pieces, all though this cool new technology,” says Jonathan Cathey, Owner The Loyal Subjects, who provided limited edition toys designed by CA artists Alex Pardee and Buff Monster.

“I thought designer toy hunting was vicious before, but GoldRun will begin a new chase of a different kind. This is an exciting time for all the players involved in this international movement. It's a huge honor to involved in this exciting initiative. I recommend that you have a spare battery and I wish you lots of luck,” said Eric Scarecrow, Artist and Owner ESC-Toys Ltd.

Capture Runaway Designer Toys

(Available Location-Specific Run)

24 designer toys have escaped their blister-packed, bubble-wrapped confines and are wreaking havoc in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and London! These playful runaways are scattered in 3 specific real-world locations in each city, and it is up to the player to recapture the artist’s offspring. By following the pin drop on the featured map within the app and snapping photos of virtual objects, players ‘capture’ the toys before they can cause even more ruckus.

2 runaways will remain within 3 areas of each city for a total of 3 weeks each. Thus giving a player present in one city a total of 6 chances to win among a selection of the most exclusive Designer Toy prizes available in the 6 week long campaign.

Feed the Toy Ego

(Available Global Run + City-Specific Run)

Some of the escaped designer toys have different aspirations: these “attention seekers” are present globally (literally everywhere, at your office, your school, your home!) as well as city-wide (New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and London) and allow for a different level of game-play. These celebrity-wannabes want to increase their online clout, and users will compete against one another to gain points for every photo taken and shared on Facebook and Twitter. With the proper amount of camera-time, users can immortalize their moment with the toys in the online space, and only the best paparazzo will achieve the coveted #1 spot on the game’s Leaderboard, winning the toy of their choice.

Players can show their appreciation and support for the artists involved and are encouraged to hashtag #designertoyrun and the respective artists, @Cluttermagazine and @GoldRunGo when sharing via Twitter. A dedicated Clutter & Goldrun Designer Toy Run online hub will exist on Clutter Magazine’s website at www.cluttermagazine.com for users to view toys and photos submitted by all participants around the globe.

Artists participating in the campaign include Gary Baseman, Buff Monster, Jon Burgerman, Travis Cain, Mori Chack, Luke Chueh, Devilrobots, Bob Dob, Tristan Eaton, Louise Evans, Gus Fink, Brian Flynn, Furi Furi, Gary Ham, Joshua Herbolsheimer, Matt Lunartik Jones, Frank Kozik, Joe Ledbetter, Yosiell Lorenzo, Winson Ma, Jeremy Madl, Mark Nagata, Rami Niemi, Alex Pardee, Jermaine Rogers, Ronzo, Jose Sabate, Erick Scarecrow, Greg Simkins, Holly Stanway, John Stokes, Kristofer Ström, Touma, Var, Matt Walker, Kenny Wong, Andy Woo.

Darth Vader & The Lost Command Hardcover Collection (Comic Review)

Title: Darth Vader & The Lost Command
Author: Haden Blackman
Illustrator: Rick Leonardi
Pages: 128

Story - Still haunted by the death of Anakin Skywalker's beloved Padmé in Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader is tasked with a mission to locate a lost Imperial expeditionary force--led by the son of Vader's rising nemesis, Moff Tarkin. But the perils of Vader's journey into the unexplored Ghost Nebula are compounded by traitors among his crew and the presence of the system's religious leader, Lady Saro.

The story is really an interesting read. The highlight of the story is definitely Vader. We see another side of Vader in this story, we see Vader questioning whether he made the right decision or not, with joining the Emperor. His dreams of Padme and family that he could of had, really makes you emphasize with Vader. However that really makes this story more enjoyable, as you see Vader take on his mission and unleash his rage and brutal ways, it makes you really think whether he has fully turn to the Darkside, or is he taking out his anger from his decision. It's a great read for fans of Star Wars. Haden Blackman gives an more interesting glance at the mind of Vader and fans will pleased, with the what if sequences that Vader thinks ups once he is alone. The story has conflict, turmoil and some cool action scenes as well.

Art - The art is not what I expected, but that isn't a bad thing. The art is very detail and some pictures look like color sketches which looks wonderful, during Vader's dream sequence. The details and battles look great and the emotion on Vader's eyes is greatly shown. Some might be thrown off by the art style, but it fits the story and universe.

Final Grade B-/8.0 - Darth Vader & The Lost Command is fun, dark and sad when you the layers of Vader is paid off. It's a nice look at Vader ruthless ways, but you can still see the good in him.

The PS Vita Is Confusing

I was reading on Joystiq and they found out some games will need you to have internal memory, not a bad thing but only some games allow that, but the thing that is being said full is that if the game does save to the system it would only save there, even if you have a memory card, which is priority micro-SD cards which means it matters where you get the SD card, if its not made by Sony or someone else that Sony allows, you cant use a micro-SD care you got somewhere else.
So now it looks like its not optional to get the cheaper model and just a few memory cards. It looks like now you need to get the memory cards for the model with the internal HDD no matter what. This is not looking so good from the Vita at all when compared to the Nintendo 3DS. Look at the 3DS for a second and compare them, the 3DS doesn’t have a priority memory card you can use any micro-SD card you like, while the PSV you have to pick between different models that come in different sizes and it would all need memory cards, no matter which one you pick the game will have DLC but it was said that it might be downloaded to the cartridges, MIGHT DOWLOAD TO THE CARTRIDGES.

As of right now there are too many what if's with this system and whenever I hear something new my joy from hearing it from E3 this year, has been doing nothing but going down faster and faster. I still think this could have promise but the one thing that is making me even worry was how it is meant to be mainly a download system, that's a system that pretty much just has downloads on it. While there are going to be cartridges there is still the fact that am thinking I would still need to have a phone company on my system to get the most out of it. That is the one thing I don’t want to hear next, but with how it is going, I think the next thing we will hear would be that we need to have AT&T, which is the only phone company that will give the PSV a data plan. Really, I don’t have high hopes for the PSV but I will keep my eye opens on it. For now I will get stuck with my PSP and wait on getting my 3DS, which is in my plans for now.

Now for those that might be confused (like me) you can get the bundle and it does what I think it does. The bundle only comes with the most expensive PSV (3G and WI-FI inside the system so to use it fully you will need a data plan from AT&T), a 4GB memory card(which might be worth nothing, because of the fact that we don't know how big the games are and how its really pushing downloads beyond anything else or how big the download might be), a case for the PSV(I have no problems with that) and a copy of Little Deviants(its a collection of mini games to show off the PSV tech). All and all, this is pretty weak of Sony. They are pretty much forcing the 3G model down people's throats cause it comes with everything you would need, that being mainly the memory card. Everything else I would have to say is up to the person, however I still see very little value in that bundle and I would suggest everyone to wait and see how they clear things up.

I am just confused on how you need a memory card at all if the system got memory on the inside to begin with.
